This lopping off reminds us of the Mosaic Law where people who were 'cut off' were put to death.
So this verse is not a contrast of 'everlasting life verses everlasting punishment' but of 'everlasting life verses everlasting death'.
The punishment itself is momentary; the sleep it induces is everlasting.

Unlike the other 3 illustrations, the faithful slave (Mt 24:45-51), the 10 virgins (Mt 25:1-13), and the talents (Mt 25:14-30), this illustration of the sheep and the goats (Mt 25:31-46) does not directly involve Christ's 'little flock'. By the time this event takes place, all those going to heaven will already have been 'sealed' for life.

Since these ones would already been separated out prior to Jesus coming for judgement, they are not the sheep in this particular illustration but are symbolized by "the King's brothers." (Mt 25:40)
