Is the Concept of God Necessary To Explain Anything?

farfignewton

the man!
Is the concept of god necessary to explain anything? If so, what? How is it necessary? If not, why not?

I am not an atheist, but I heard an interisting argument from one once.

With out the concept of God, mankind would more than likely be at peace. If all of mankind was at peace, there would be no wars. With out wars, mankind would take over the face of the earth, letting the population run rampet. The concept of god is nessary in order for this plannet to survive mankind, if for no other reason than population control.

Me being a christian, my thought need not be put down. There probable already represented elsewhere.

Well, if we were all at peace, we would have more resources to do scientific and engineering research, and we would have more cooperation between nations, if they existed, improving efficiency. From that, we would have more productive farming, due to advances in farming technology, more densely populated areas, due to advances in building construction, and so forth. We might even be terraforming mars and the moon, to make more room to live.

You can't just take one part of your chain of logic and disregard the other consequences.

Oh, I disagree. It's having the (what I think is) ludicrous idea that god would actually want us to go to war, or that a particular religion somehow "loses" something by not going to war. It really is beyond me!

Hmm, someone inform me how the Vietnam War, Korean War, Desert Storm, WWI, WWII, Revolutionary War, French Revolution, 30-Years War, Socialist Revolution, French & Indian War, Civil War, Feudal China, Feudal Japan, the Napoleonic Wars, the Assyrian Empire, the Roman Empire, the Babylonian Empire, the Hellenistic Empire, the Egyptian Empire, or even the Rennaissance had ANYTHING to do with religion besides the fact that religion EXISTED. Please, please explain in detail.

That would be a waste of time.

Ha, look who's refusing to answer my question.

Btw, nice job only referring to the last thing on my list, and not even quoting the end of the sentence. Real savvy.

OK, fine.

Now I'm on topic. I disagree with that statement because I think that is a ludicrous generalization.

Of course not! You don't need to have a concept of an internal combustion engine to drive a car. That doesn't stop the car from going until you forget to put in the magic go juice!

Truth has little to do with our beliefs. Needing the truth is not a bad thing either. :D

But you need to have a concept of an internal combusion engine to have a car with an internal combusion engine. That would stop the car from going.

I was driving the car Jay.

The biggest fallacy is trying to discern the spiritual using physical evidences. Sure, you can deduce some things, but there is no unequivocal proof.
