Religion is bad--it teaches the lie that people can improve their moral behavior over time, so much so from the outside in, that they can be eligible to live in a morally perfect utopia.

Religion is neither good nor bad. It can't be summed up that simply.

One thing I can say with complete confidence, however, is that religion is unnecessary. The the proof for this (if anyone were of a mind to contend) is simple. The very number of religions and religious positions - all held while the holders of said positions ALL mete out their respective existences, having no more troubles surviving than any other group - is proof positive that religion is in no way a necessity. Not even in the ballpark.

As a Muslim, if I lived there I'd be killed by them

It is. They're (their government) militant puritans, the ideology they espouse (Wahhabism) is behind most terrorism. They're kind of a cow that the US are still milking though. They don't want to admit that they are a recent invention though (three centuries old), lol.

That's insane. So, you being Muslim why is it exactly that you'd be killed?

They're puritans who believe that traditional Sunnis and Shia's (like me) are practicing the wrong religion, basically - and want us to convert to their f**cked up cult. They emerged from a stream of thought within Sunnism around the end of the medieval period, were the view slowly perpetuated that traditional Sunnis and Shia's are idol worshipers and that we've softened. The Wabbahi ideology itself was formed by Ibn Abd al-Wahhab.
They see themselves in responsibility to force people to accept their literalist, fundimentalist version of Islam (with lots of idealism towards the early Sunnis who killed the family of the prophet Muhammad).
A Shia is a direct target to these people because we believe in a succession through the family of the prophet, which has mystical (and metaphysical, to an extent) elements, we emphasize the esoteric (the inner, hidden) element of the scripture (that westerners tend to deny even exists :tearsofjoy:), not the outer (this is also an aspect of what separates us from regular Sunnis)
Essentially, we're heretics to them like any other religion that sets foot in their country. Sadly they have political control over our sacred city of Mecca and are committing all kinds of atrocities in the name of "Islam" for the world to see.

That is absolutely horrible. So sad. I know the depth & beauty within Islam. Rumi is one of the greatest minds of all time imo. I do hope peace prevails.

I'm sorry for the grand-father. Well, if I defend religion then I too, am ignorant. It is because of religion we see the great many benefits (and evils) we see in the world. We learn from history how extremism can cause one to transgress the benign foundational boundaries peaceful religions exercise but to blame religion in its entirety even doctrinal religions is also ignorant.

I know a Christian and a Muslim family that would invite you over to break bread with you in their home and would treat you like family. they credit their doctrine and their God for the foundations of their hospitality. There are millions more families that do the same, so what say you about their religion and their intolerance?

Like everything in life its got bad and good.
When you abuse it, its bad.

The problem with religion is the fact it holds no examination. you can invent whatever you like and people can believe it and accept it.

There is only one primary use of religion while living in Flesh and Blood. To protect you from hell. Why would God build hell? For angels to go and play.

Philosophy that unites is a religion. Philosophy that divides is a cult. :)
