I live within 10 mi. of Portland, so I'm aware of the prices. For just my husband and myself, I know I don't spend more than $300 a month--as long as we never eat out. So $160/mo. for one person is doable. It won't be easy; however, it never was meant to be easy. Just doable.
Use coupons. Buy in bulk. No convenience foods. Take sack lunches. No boxed cereals. Join the gleaners club--which is available in Portland because our area is so fertile. Make from scratch. ie. All baked goods, noodles, crackers, tortillas, granola, jams and syrups, all soups, and even soap and other cleaning products. (I've done it all.)
Living off other taxpayers, shouldn't be easy.
