how is the US election going?

If only a larger percentage of American's were better informed... about virtually everything. The number of polls saying, “10% of American's don't know where X is” or, “20% of American's believe X is true, when X has been disproved” is overwhelming.

It would be interesting to see a study that compares how informed people are to where their political loyalties lie.

It's quiet before the storm, right now. The democratic convention is coming up next week and that will signal the final run for the vote in November. The republicans have been trying out various smear campaigns sort of quietly, (Obama is a shady foreigner, and can't be trusted, Obama is a snotty elitist who thinks he's smarter than you, etc.) but I'm sure that in the next couple of months, they will attack in earnest. How and how well Obama counters will say a lot about who he is, and may win or lose him the election.

....and all will depend on how well Barack Obama's Vice Presidential pick will sit with the voters. Many will approve of the pick, citing the experience of Joe Biden as essential to Barack's chances of winning the Presidency. Others, probably the younger voters looking for sincere change, will lambast the decision as a clear refutation of his earlier promise to bring true change to America. But it looks as though many voters were the most weary of Obama's lack of experience, so it may have been the right choice.

Several good points already in this thread.

In America, we have such an inbred arrogance about our station in this world, that a percentage of our population seems absolutely content with their level of ignorance on issues ranging from world history, to science, and even into current events. Sad, but true.

Also, as PureX has pointed out, the really ugly dirt machine is getting ready to crank up. The "swiftboaters" for both sides will soon be running at full throttle, and this year promises to be even nastier than those of the recent past.

Are you seriously suggesting that Americans need to re-examine their commitment to being the world's foremost buffoons? What kind of patriot are you, TVOR?

Good question, Sunstone. As many in the neocon movement would tell you, I'm not a real American because I don't embrace the concept of Manifest Destiny as applied to modern day America.

To some, you can only be a real American if you think our **** doesn't stink.

Yep, we've been catching the negative ad campaigns too...ugh....hope its not like this all the way up to the election again. I've never known a negative ad to convince anyone...just bolster the convictions of those who already agree. I'd say the real meat of the campaign is about to start, but I'm already wearied with the process...I watched everything I could find on the runoff between the democratic candidates, I wanted to be as informed as I could...now I feel like the whole process is starting again.

Not knowing your posting history, I will ask if you are making the obvious insinuation that I am a communist (or socialist) because of my post, or if there is some other meaning in your post?

I realize that it is possible that you are simply kidding, but I just want to be certain that I don't misread your post.

I was just joking guys, lol. I meant nothing serious by it, I was just making a little jab at American Patriotism/Macho-ism.

McCain cheers gloomy Republicans

From what I see and hear the country is starting to suffer from Obama burn out. He's still being hyped in the media but McCain is still neck and neck if not ahead.

Speaking as the common man from a swing state I'm sick of both these turds.
