Have You Ever Been Fired? And, if so, by a man or a woman?

I am soon to be 59 years old this July. Even while attending my University, I worked a simple job even though it was few hours and part time and more about just doing something that was fun before going into a real job. I was soliticited for hires in my last year of schooling, later went into a profession and personally was never fired from a single job neither those fun jobs nor professional.

But being in IT, I have many get fired over the years and the pace is increasing. Not just downsized, but fired.

Maybe I am crazy, but in the majority of cases, not just today but in the past as well, it has been my observation that the person who actually fired (not downsized) the person who lost their job, be it a man or a woman who was fired, it was a woman "boss" who fired the person and most often for the most petty or inane or imagined reasons. Often it was just plain jealousy and inane backbiting.

Or am I crazy to notice this, and I am totally off base? I think one of the reasons I have never been fired is because I started to notice this and always tried to make sure whoever was my "boss" was a man and not a woman. All the successful women that I have worked with who were not fired also typically avoided a female "boss" because of like observation.

So I am curious - have YOU ever been fired (different than downsized but fired as if you are doing something wrong), and if so was the person ("boss" or other) who fired you a man or a woman?

The choices are:

Yes, by a woman

Yes, by a man

No, I was never fired from a job

This s/b fun.

I had and was fired from around 30 jobs, by both men and women. The majority of the time, I was fired by men. And always at 4:55 pm on a Friday.

And if you're looking for more interesting factoids: The best boss I ever had was a female (Karen). The worst boss I ever had was a female (Nancy).

... of course, there are probably some on the forum who never had a job. I guess you don't vote but your opinions are welcome. I would include many professors as part of this category but not all as never having a job. IMHO. And many politicians.

Remember this is NOT about being downsized out of a job for no fault of your own such as a bad economy. I am talking about being told "you did xyz wrong" or told "you do a crappy job" so YOU ARE FIRED.

I have only been fired (technically) from one job, and it was by a man. But he owned the entire company. It was a construction job I was working right out of high school.

EDIT: I was fired for sleeping on the job :p

Err, why isn't there an option for having been fired by a man and then a woman or vice-verse?

Did the construction job owned entirely by one guy also be a construction job owned by a guy who was also married to a woman who was a ***** and the "real" boss (wife) of that boss and she was always nagging the boss to whip the slaves so she can go on a vacation to Hawaii and buy a new purse?

And why were you sleeping on the job? I do that off and on myself, and actually get praised for "work - life balance" since when I do work, which is give and take, the value of the work is worth letting me take naps, long lunch breaks, or being on the internet. It is amazing, what I get paid for well when I don't think it is half worth what they pay me. But WTH, I will take the money....

I am on the job, but I am checking out for a while to take a nap and will check back in on the internet later in a couple of hours. I drove into work at 2AM because I left a USB stick on my desk and was worried some janitor would pick it up or some sneekjob showing up at work at 6am because it had some cutting edge computer code I wrote on it and worried some louse would steal it.

I've been fired twice, once at 18 years old and around 21, both by men who were dookie-heads to begin with. When I was data center ops manager I fired three women, at different times, for poor job performance. I'll be 58 in July and am still in this Gods-forsaken IT business (dear Gods, I should have become a cop). If I were given my walking papers I would not try to find something in IT again. I'd mop floors at Monmouth Mall before I got back into anything remotely IT or corporate.

Indeed, the IT thing is becoming horrible as you say. If I would start something new instead, I would do something in epidemiology.

But I am too old now to start over, anyway I am going to retire. But if you were fired, was it actually justified?

I think, usually if not, in my observation it was a female boss who fires either another female or a male, doesn't matter which, those I have seen fired unjustly it was usually some female boss (hetero female by the way, not lesbian).

The only thing I can think of that might have gotten me fired, was one time, probably only 2 years "into my career" when some female at work kept trying to make advances that I would reject. She wasn't bad looking or anything, but word was out she brought food into work several times at "potlucks" and she was a lousy cook. Also she wasn't a brunette which I favor for some unknown reason. She kept bugging me, so one day she starting sending her female "friends" over to me to act as a proxy for her to try and get me involved with her since I kept rejecting her, and I thought "this is now really out of hand", so I told one proxy after being asked "do you have any girlfriend? What about xyz, she's really something!", I said something very mean (and felt bad about it actually), but I said to the proxy to try and stop such matters, "I think she looks like a monkey".

Big mistake. Next thing I knew her and some of her friends starting doing things off work. They would follow me, for example, in their car. Then they got real mad... suddenly I started getting magazines subscribed to my home address that I never subscribed to with "bill me later" crap. Then I found out one of her "friends" told someone they were behind it even though I told no one at work about the magazines. I was tipped off. So the next day I take a roll of these magazines like a rolled up tube, and then I throw it slam down in front of her feet at work (about four magazines in a roll).

This goes right away to the "boss" who was a guy. I explain what happened and incredibly I wasn't fired. Neither was she. But she was fired later by a female boss for flirting with someone else who I suspect the boss had interest in. By then I was a million miles away from both her and her boss.

But maybe I am crazy in my observations.

Personally, I don't think there's any male/female correlation regarding firing. Whatever sex your boss is, that's the sex of the person that fires you.

I was once fired for being "Setian", but in their mind "demonic"/"Satanic"/"evil". A long story which I will not relive again.

For real, fired for being Setian? I would think you could have taken them to court, Adramelek. Now sometimes there are dress codes that are enforced and those who do not comply might be fired. But firing someone just because they are Satanic is illegal.

This s/b fun.

In my industry, most of my bosses have been female. I've been fired twice. Once because I was pregnant. Both times I was fired by female bosses.

I'm the boss now. But I wouldn't avoid female bosses just because of my track record. The odds were in favor of a female boss firing me anyway, so there you go.

Meh, it depends on how they do it. I know Adramelek doesn't want to relive it, so I'll address it from a personal perspective. Most states in the US are at-will employment, as you may know. You can be fired for any or no reason, with or without warning or cause, as long as there's no discernible overt discrimination. And believe you me, they're shrewdies. I was a subcontractor for a division of IBM... aka I Been Manhandled. For 18 months on the job I walked on water. Then all of a sudden I was lower than dirt. Gee, what changed... well, it became known I'm gay. Oh and the comment that I didn't represent IBM to the client in the way they preferred. Huh say whaaaaa??? I mean, it's not like I came flouncing in wearing purple taffeta and gold lamé slingbacks (ooh, how gauche! everyone knows you wear red lamé pumps with purple taffeta!). On Friday night before I even got home from there was a message in my voice mail saying my "engagement had been terminated". I was to go in Monday to clean out my desk. There was a security guy standing by my desk rolling his eyes and shaking his head because he knew me, and how slimy this whole thing was, waiting to escort me out. Three employment attorneys said "get on with your life... you'll never prove discrimination", because IBM was slick and slimy about it. So... you do get on with it.

Never been fired. This is my first job ever and I've been in it for more than 8 years.

But if I'm to be fired by a women, I want her to be a hot women :D

I've never been fired but I've had quite a number of bosses over the years. Some were good and some were bad, some were male and some were female, but no obvious correlation there that I can think of.
