Hello, I rejoined this forum with a question in mind.

I have friends and family in various denominations and I have attended their church at some point years ago. Although, It has been many years since I have taken religion and anything associated seriously. I have been thinking of going back to church but I get turned off by experiences of preaching politics and judgmental diatribes.

I would like to find a church that talks positively of people, holding no judgment of personal choices or sexual orientation. I prefer to hear about God, Jesus Parables and stories of the bible without the twisted interpretation. I don't like to hear preaching about political candidates and who is wrong or right regarding bible interpretations. I am not a fan of Christian rock. I am not for strange social rules of congregations or being sucked into a social congregation fold for my own good. I am not looking for religious structure which is often suggested in my past experiences. I edited my first post to tighten up my request if anyone had noticed a change in this post.

    Any suggestions?

What are personal choices? Why would you think that your views of sexual morality are superior to the Church's?

Surely, if you wish to join a Church you want to give your all to Christ, not just what is left once you exclude what an automatic adherence to modern mores won't allow to be questioned.

I didn't say I was going to join a church. I didn't say my views are superior either. My views are what they are exactly, my views. I am interested in attending a church to have a listen with criteria as stated above. Thanks for your suggestion?

I did some further research and I am going to look into the local Society of Friends.

    • the elimination of the need for a "hireling minister"or other intermediary between the individual and God
    • the opportunity and obligation for each to seek God's leading, both individually and corporately in worship
    • as the writers of the Bible were inspired, the manifestation of the Inner Light also allows us to experience the continuing revelation of God
    • the accordance of equality and respect to all
    • the leading to respond to the needs of all peoples
    • the refusal to take oaths, for there is but a single standard of truth
    • the commitment to live simply so that others can simply live
    • the "living" of the sacraments rather than the observation of them outwardly
    • the conviction that peace can best be attained by striving to trust to love rather than by reacting to fear. -----
Any other suggestions or shared experience with Society of Friends is appreciated.

What do you mean "the church"? and conversly, why would anyone think a particular churches views are superior to their own?

What do I mean by the Church - 'Quod Ubique, Quod Semper, Quod ab Omnibus'—St Vincent of Lérins.

Well, for a start, I suspect that in the case of the views in question, it is not so much a case of one's well-thought out, painstakingly constructed ethical and spiritual views versus those of a particular Church, but what is founded directly on what one has largely unconsciously imbibed from the contemporary cultural zeitgeist versus those of a particular Church. When I see, for example, those keen to denounce so called homophobia properly grapple with Thomistic natural law teaching on the matter, or traditional Christian views on sexuality, I will be astounded.

Anyway, a Christian should give a very great deference to what has been handed by the Church in traditions going back to the early Church, and to the opinions and arguments of the Fathers and great divines of the Church.

I am sure you know more about the Christian faith, armed with the prejudices of modern left-liberalism, than the Apostles, the Fathers, and great divines of the Church, and can flippantly set these at nought. I'm sure you will be a great boon the Church.
