Forced marriages is not allowed in islam

"O ye who believe! Ye are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should ye treat them with harshness Quran 4:19

    Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: "
A virgin came to the Prophet (pbuh) and mentioned that her father had married her against her will, so the Prophet (pbuh) allowed her to exercise her choice. (Translation of Sunan Abu-Dawud, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 11, Number 2091

"My father married me (Al Khansa' bint Khidam) to his nephew, and I did not like this match, so I complained to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH). He said to me: `Accept what your father has arranged.' I said, `I do not wish to accept what my father has arranged.' He said, `Then this marriage is invalid, go and marry whomever you wish.' I said, `I have accepted what my father has arranged, but I wanted women to know that fathers have no right in their daughter's matters (i.e. they have no right to force a marriage on them)." (Bukhari)

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “The virgin should not be given in marriage until her permission has been sought.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 6968; Muslim, 1419)

So why does forced marriages happen in muslim countries??

There might be another side to this.
Are there any passages that could
be read to allow coerced marriage?

    No.
Tradition and culture are among the reasons why this might happen.
..alongside family pressures, such as poverty and worry about a daughters welfare.
Parents often mean well, but if a girl does not want to marry a person, she shouldn't be forced to.
If only we could follow Islam perfectly, but many of us can't. :(

Because, obviously, forced marriages are often allowed in Islam.

The religion - any religion - is what its adherents actually practice. Sometimes thie practice aligns with the religion's scriptures, sometimes it doesn't.

And quite often scriptures are vague enough or apparently contradicting so that multiple interpretations exist.

My ex-father-in-law, who was Italian and around 70 at the time, married a Moroccan woman in her early 20s in said country, on the condition that he became a "Muslim", otherwise her father would not have approved the marriage. The girl was not asked, and it was clear from her behavior that this arrangement was not a love match at all. o_O

    It is pre-islamic indigenous culture.
I imagine like Christians, their religious leaders only recite select passages to them. So they may not be aware of the Quranic passages on this.

I've been surprised how many Christians I've come across that don't know some of the stories in the Bible. They go to church and hear only what the pastor tells them, then go on about their life.
I suspect many in Islam do the same.
Yes "Islam" is their culture but that culture's relationship to the Quran is limited.

This is all actually happening. What the heck???
Depends on if you like the person you're arranged with or not.
