Indeed. It was our inner experience of trying to understand out environment that gods were created.

well, my faith is certenly centered on personal experience, and it is quite old 
But I'm pretty sure that like lots of power systems there were those who abused it for power and statecraft. We havent changed all that much since the 'old days'.
