Do Avatars Govern Our Perceptions Of Posters?

Sometimes I find that out of the clear blue, a poster is angry with me...even when I'm on me best behavior. And then I look at me avatar, which is variously an angry Scottish janitor shaking his fist, brandishing a hoe or shovel, or with his arm down a terlit. Does this mislead some from me normally soft & fluffy personality?

What other avatars create a strong impression about the poster?

I never really had any strong impression about a poster based on Avatar. I have however had strong impressions based on posts and felt the Avatar was either spot on or incredibly wrong

That's an interesting question. I believe that avatars do have an impact on one's perception of the poster, even if it is a subtle one. The lack of an avatar does as well. I have a tendency to think of those without avatars as noobies, even if they aren't. It's sort of a gut-reaction thing.
Aye, the lack of one just seems wrong.

I just added my avatar and it makes posting on this forum feel different somehow.

They don't really affect my impressions about a poster. But it does confuse the crap out of me when someone goes and changes their avatar to something totally unrelated to their previous one. I tend to remember posters by their avatar better than by their actual name...

Edit: I also just changed my avatar for the first time since joining this site a decade ago.

I'm thinking of sticking with this Groundskeeper Willie as my new standard.
(Of course, I'll change things up temporarily now & then.)

I have an impression that it makes other posters are less hostile to me when disagreeing.
Opinions?
