Genetically engineered (GE) crops are crops that have been engineered to produce certain qualities not intrinsic to the plant itself. They are more commonly referred to as genetically modified organisms (GMO). An organism is inserted with genetic material from a different species to create a new organism not developed in nature or through traditional breeding. But there are concerns with GE crops, for example, because of uncertainty due to the lax regulation of government agencies and the lack of unbiased scientific research in the long-term human and environmental health impacts.
There are also concerns regarding the destruction of ecosystems, because the majority of GE crops are engineered to work in partnership with a specific herbicide. These chemicals are sprayed freely and extensively on farmland, negatively impacting surrounding communities and ecosystems. This could be one of the reasons why there has been a decline in honey bee populations in recent years.
Also, excessive use of pesticides and herbicides has led to super weeds and pests that have developed resistance to commonly used pesticides. The use of GMO crops have also led to a proliferation of single-crop farming, which has led to soil degradation and overuse of nitrogen fertilizers, polluting our waterways and creating dead zones void of aquatic life. In the U.S, GMOs are in as much as 80% of conventional processed food. According to a Reuters story three years ago, this has led to the growing of super crops, super cows, and super chickens through the using the latest genetic technologies. Manipulating the genes of one species with another-especially an unclean species- IS corrupting Yahweh's creation!
Please discuss.
