I like certain memoirs such as people who go through hard experiences. I like movie wise genres like sci-fi, drama, comedy,
crime horror( as in the Saw series and Silence of the Lambs)

Iain Banks. What good taste you have! Iain was a friend of mine, and my favourite of his is The Crow Road.

You might like All The Light We Cannot See. Historical fiction about two people surviving WW2, a young German boy and a blind French girl under occupation.

For Sci-fi I just finished Project Hail Mary, done by the same author as The Martian, which is also an excellent book.

For horror I'd try The SCP Foundation. Very 'occult government studying supernatural phenomenon' type vibes.

Bleak House is unbeatable, in my opinion. Apart from biting social commentary and a cast of apparently extraordinary but actually quite real characters, there is an exciting detective story and some poignant and unexpected twists. And Dickens dials down the Victorian schmalz to some degree, which is what some people (including me) can find off-putting.

I agree that's excellent, but it's a bit boys' stuff for science buffs*.;)

I have all his books except Raw Spirit although i have bought it as a present for a German friend who was planning a whisky trail walking holiday.

I do like the Crow Road, it was the first non SF book of his i read... And the the TV adaptation was pretty good too

You are privileged to have known him

Then you'll love Iain M Banks

Not to be confused with Iain Banks... Same guy who wrote all his sci-fi under Iain M Banks and straigh fiction under Iain Banks. Except Transition which is another great book of his

If we are doing Orwell I recommend "Coming Up for Air". Not political but a nicely observed story about personal life, the passage of time and memory.

I read Debbie Reynold's 2013 memoir. It was good, very interesting. She's a famous film star, and so is her daughter Carrie Fischer. This memoir talks about her money, marriages, a bit about Carry Fischer's upbringing..Debbie Reynold's extreme unction to create a museum from old hollywood sets. You'd like it. I should mention it is the only memoir I have ever read, but it is good in my opinion.

    Unsinkable
