Bicycles!

I've got a pretty generic decent quality hardtail mountain bike.

Seems to get the job done.

saw a bike with unusually fat tires
took a look for replacements it needed, online
the spares are almost the cost of the original purchase.

as if the frame is free when you get the bike.
hope you never need new tires!

This statement is not what I expect from an engineer.
You must have some geekiness in your relationship with your bike!
I've modified my new Dahon Speed P8 to be faster, safer, comfier, & more of a truck.
I'm not a weight weenie, so that's the area of sacrifice...it's prolly close to 30# now.

That changes when you buy the expensive fat tire bikes.
I'd love to try one out in the back 40, & in the snow.

I think I can honestly say I have zero bike geekiness.

I figure that the mechanical engineers at Trek know how to make a bike better than me, so I'm not going to do any modification.

Years back, I just looked up various pros and cons of mountain bikes, checked out reviews, and picked one suitable to the way I'd ride it.

I've been nerdy my whole life. I gave up caring a long time ago. We're hopefully moving to the desert in a few years, maybe I'll try one out. Few hills in desert. ;)
I live in a desert, and we're right up against a Mt range -- plenty of hills. Could have better bike lanes downtown, but the suburbs are mostly pretty bike friendly.

My favorites are BMX bikes and cruisers. My favorite brand is Schwinn. I had a killer red Schwinn BMX bike as a kid but I only had it for about a week because I let one of my "friends" ride it around the block and someone stole it from him. That was the best bike I ever had. I never forgave him for that and his family never made it up to me. They give me a rundown mountain bike to attempt to make up for it. I realize now that they should've repaid me the cost of the bike or we should've went down to the shop and have them buy me the same bike.

I had a Mongoose after that but the frames of those bikes suck and it didn't last long. I also found a beatup mountain bike at a bus stop years ago that I took home but the gears were shot so I just left at the apartment when I moved.

I haven't had a bike since. Too depressed and too broke. I used to skateboard, bike ride, rollerblade, play basketball and soccer but I dropped all of that when I turned 13 and all my friends in the neighborhood moved away, and I fell into a deep depression that lasted for years and ruined my schooling. I haven't picked up any of that since then. Oh, well.

Of course they'd know more than those of us not in the industry.
But they also make compromises for mass marketing, so there's
much opportunity for the geek to customize one's own bike to
suit one's own preferences. Nearly anything can become lighter,
faster, stronger, prettier, comfier, or more durable. All it takes is
money, time, & an unhealthy obsession.

Since I specialized in advanced design for various vehicles (literally planes, trains
& automobiles), I'm compelled to keep improving something until it no longer works.

May things improve so that you can get your ride on again!
