atheists:why bother participating in a religious forum?

Atheist are some of the most religious people I know

There is in fact some truth to this, when properly qualified.

We atheists, knowing that there is no Higher Power watching for us, sometimes do indeed develop a very religious attitude. Sort of like "we ought to watch for each other, lest we all end up alone".

But certainly not in a theistic sense.

We have nothing to lose and everything to gain by talking to those who hold different beliefs to our own.

I remember going to a secular group IRL and being questioned by my theistic friend, "Why on earth would an atheist want to do that??"... as if, unlike everybody else, atheists lack the need to seek out like minded people...

As it turns out, people who actively identify as being an atheist tend to a lot in common with theistic folk due to a common area of interest that they all feel strongly enough about to make up their minds over.

you might ask theists here the same question, arent your minds already made up? when logic and science contradict your beliefs (not to mention your own books half the time) what could you possibly take away from the experience?

I visit and debate the topics on this forum, because I care for my fellow human beings and would like to see them ridden of this folly that keeps them preoccupied.

I'm just curious why an atheist would even bother lurking, never mind actively participating in a religious forum?Nothing to say you can't but why bother?you already have made up your mind on the matter so what do you get out of this forum?I ask out of respect and curiosity and not in any way do i mean it as a challenge.
Somebody said there would be refreshments afterward.

When I was an atheist, I was still very interested in studying, and talking to people about religion. Heck, I think that was one of things that got me out of atheism.

hmm... what do classify yourself as now? Or do you think labels are overrated? I kind of do.

Right now, I consider myself a seeker who is trying to find the truth about myself. To be honest, I was never an atheist at heart. The atheism that I had was nothing more than a form of a rebellion.

I have always believed that there is something...and someone beyond this.

If you believe there is no God than you believe
yourself to be the highest authority in the universe.
This is a form of self worship. Therefore atheism is
a religion.

Theism is not a religion. It's contrary position is not a religion either.

This isn't a debate area. Go tell your lies in the debate areas. Trust me, we all see you for what you really are here.

I never quite understood the insistence on non-religious status by some atheists (myself not included, obviously). The difference is minor. I guess to such atheists the word "religion" implies basis in blind faith, but that implication isn't inherent in the meaning of the word, and certainly most people don't think of it that way.

You can argue the semantics, but in the end I don't think it causes any more confusion to refer to atheism as a religion. So I ask, aren't there a lot more important things to be arguing about, like the religious indoctrination of children or the teaching of creationism in schools?

Can an Atheist be spiritual?

I will explain my basic beliefs:

I am a Unitarian Universalist, I attend the church and random rituals weekly, I meditate, engage in ceremonies and celebrations as often as I can, attend drumming circles, spirit dance, do visualizations and affirmations, read daily devotionals, when I am at home I light candles and incense and turn on some celtic or new age music usually and I tend to nature, I look up at the stars and try to make an emotional connection to it.

To me, The Universe is the Ultimate reality, Nature is sacred to me, holy even, divine, it deserves respect, reverence, honor, admiration, all of the things believers say their God deserves I turn towards Nature.

Ive encountered Pantheism but I do not believe the Universe is God.
Naturalistic Paganism maybe but I do believe in 2% of what most would call the supernatural: Magic, Trance (Though I admit both could be psychological), Divination (could be random but still the lessons are worthy to consider).

Most of the things that Pagans believe in I consider to be bunk, to believe in astral projection and Ghosts and Angels and such I need to either personally experience these things as truth which I havent or I need to see objective proof that these things exist which I havent so that settles it for me, people have their ideas and opinions but they are based in subjective experiences and desires-not reality.

Lately I have been calling myself an Eclectic Pagan and explaining to people what I believe if asked but for years I would say I was a Spiritual Atheist, it didnt go over too well needless to say especially IRL but it did seem like the best label

I dont believe in God, I dont believe in 99% of the supernatural, I am not superstitious, I am open minded to new experiences and ideas but havent yet been convinced by any but I do attend UU and Rituals during the week and I quite enjoy exploring new ideas, spiritual practices and the like, so what does that make me?

Just to clarify against the typical arguments I have heard-mainly from Atheists over the years...

I am NOT Agnostic. I dont believe in God, its that simple, I am not unsure, I honestly have considered myself to be a Strong Atheist in the past.

I am NOT confused. I know what I believe in, dont believe in and practice, I just dont know what to call it and it be the right label so people will understand me and where I am coming from, yeah, I dont post often but when I do, look out!

Is there a Naturalistic Pagan or Pantheist forum on here, its where I mainly hang out on other message boards because though I dont exactly believe in those ways, I do find that most of their ideas about spirituality fit in with mine. :)

?Hello, Arcanum -

I'm surprised an atheist is equating "theism" with "religion".

Personally, I practice Buddhism Since I do not support the idea of an omnipotent creator god, I consider myself an atheist, but absolutely not areligious. Therefore, I see nothing unusual about participating in a religious forum while identifying as an atheist - since I do not directly equate "religion" with "theism".
