ACT test scores for US students drop to new 30-year low

"High school students' scores on the ACT college admissions test have dropped to their lowest in more than three decades, showing a lack of student preparedness for college-level coursework, according to the nonprofit organization that administers the test.

Scores have been falling for six consecutive years, but the trend accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students in the class of 2023 whose scores were reported Wednesday were in their first year of high school when the virus reached the U.S.

"The hard truth is that we are not doing enough to ensure that graduates are truly ready for postsecondary success in college and career," said Janet Godwin, chief executive officer for the nonprofit ACT.

The average ACT composite score for U.S. students was 19.5 out of 36. Last year, the average score was 19.8."

You know. It's for the children.

Screw US. It's a hopeless cause with this pathetic generation. Too busy making selfies and begging people to like, ring the bell, and subscribe. Heh heh heh.....

Congratulations to the world's winners who really earned their distinction as the smartest people on earth.....

Crap teachers put out crap students.

So we take a generation and push college on them, as the only means of securing a good life. Then groan about not enough people in trade jobs.

Yet, when SAT/ACT scores go down, we complain because the "kids aren't ready for college."

I remember back in my day, industrial arts were regarded as the place to go for students too dumb for college.

Nothing could be further from the truth, and trades have come a long way since then.

That's just a common anti-intellectual sentiment, which comes from both intellectual and trade camps.

There are no "dumb jobs". Or jobs for the "ignorant". They all take particular types of skill sets.

Careful with the "back in my day". Otherwise you'll need to change you're avatar.

Do you realize how low that salary is for the cost of living in New York?

Unfortunately that was the way that it used to be. At least where I came from and from what I have seen we had a fairly advance school when it came to academics. But they really had no idea how to handle those that underperformed in academics. Investing in good teachers in the industrial arts was not one of their top priorities and perhaps it should have been.

Shop, wood and metal working as well as home ec. all have a place back in school settings.

No it isn't. Thats a lot of money for a lot of people in NY.

The state itself is too high. Not the other way around.

Consider the job. Teachers need certification that requires a degree and the ability to pass exams. Additional classes and job development is required to retain this certification. On the job, there are required observations and evaluations. They are responsible for the safety of the students they service beyond the academics. Teachers are mandated reporters, legally responsible for reporting abuse and neglect. Special education teachers have additional responsibilities with case management without additional compensation. Teachers are also increasingly responsible for the mental and emotional health and behavior management of the students. They have become the main daycare providers of our country while also being responsible for ensuring the academic, functional, and vocational success of the new generations.

Crap teachers? Seriously?

Well, they did lose two years of school thanks to covid. And their teachers are so underpaid and disrespected by people like you that they're quitting. And big corporate advertisers can't get those video screens in their hands fast enough, so they can begin the economic exploitation even before they enter puberty.

But by all means, blame the kids. Blame the teachers, but never blame yourself.

The evidence is students who can't even do the basic aptitude skills required for college.
So yes , it's crap teachers paid on tenure rather than abilities and competency.

It's not a wonder why education is so poor in the US and this country is already paying the price for that fact.

You take a skilled carpenter, put them in an old workshop with inferior and dated equipment, give them neglected materials, and ask them to build a house while criticizing, observing, legislating, and expecting them to take classes, you cannot do a walkthrough and then compare it to other craftsman expecting a superior product.

You also cannot find examples of bad craftsman and, given the conditions above, declare all carpenters must be bad.
