Self-identified

Question Everything
Other-identified, vs. Self-identified.

I have decided I do not like being labeled by others as:
  • Not- affiliated. (I'm sociable, I affiliate with many groups)
  • Nondenominational (seems to still group you with Christian theology?)
  • Independent (I'm not isolationist, not a hermit)
  • "None's" - those who check none of the provided survey boxes. We're not "none", would be closer to everything.
So what is a good, short, description is someone who:

  • Does not embrace heirarchies - is suspicious of any leader, prefers "by the people", not "by the king, dictator, prophet, pope"
  • Does very much embrace inclusive community collaboration.
Should I say I'm an "Inclusive Community Collaborator"? Lol.

What is a good label?

I think it is important reject incorrect derogatory labels such as non-affiliated, none, independent, unaligned. -

We have affiliations. We have beliefs (not none), we work with others, align with many things -

What are good new terms to use?

Why do you think "independent" is derogatory?

Why do you think "independent" is derogatory?

It sounds isolationist, or lone-wolf, don't need anyone kind of thing.

Dependent, codependent, independent - trouble with all of those.

Interdependent? How many are familiar with interdependent? Enter-be?

It's not for me to label you. I'll leave that task to you.

It's not just an individual thing though, it's understanding others, trying to connect using words not burdened with bias, to introduce new idea on healthy relashionships. -

Labels are relashionship builders. What relashionships work for us = what groups we are labeled with. Words/labels/communication - it's all symbolic and always a little unclear. -

friendly, I am one who listens, I am one open to change, a student and teacher, but mostly try to be a fellow traveler.

Perhaps that is what I will use -

"Fellow Traveler"

Fellow - colleague, companion, fellow human open to fellowship, friend

Traveler - someone familiar with multiple cultures and communities, not tied down, enjoys exploring, learning.

See? That wasn't so hard.

Greetings and salutations, fellow traveler.

I use Omnist.
For spiritual identification it initially was defined as "no religion is all truth, but there's some truth found in all". There has been some attempt to put specific tenets to the ideal, but truly it means everything, so it can't be bound honestly.
It also works for my political and social views. I can find pros and cons in any party platform, and extremes never fit into my way of thinking.
I'm Omnist -- open to all, adhere to nothing with boundaries of thought.

I have absolutely no problems with labels. Labels let us know which vegetable is in the can. :) Honestly, the whole point of language is that it supplies labels for actions, objects, times, etc. so that we can actually converse with each other. IOW labels facilitate communication.

My main label in this forum is Jew. It is a label that I both apply to myself, and is applied to me by my People.

Other sundry labels I have are mother, free thinker, political independent, teacher, counselor, and Trekkie :)

You are lucky that all your labels match up.

I fear my people - my family, colleagues, acquaintances, what they might call me doesn't match what I would like to be known as. Could be me, could be social norms of labels for people like me....

A rose by any other label.

What name, pronoun, label we would like - if only it all matched.

4 realities:
- what we think of ourselves
- what others think of us
- what we think others think of us
- what we actually are

The 4 different realities might match up more closely if we had clearer descriptions and words to use.

Oh, to be sure, I know quite well what it is like to be mislabeled. As a moderate and a political independent, I annoy idealogues of both the right and the left. Each side flings at me that I'm the other side. It gets tiring.

I've also experienced some very unkind labels. As an autistic individual, others experience me as somewhat odd, which is fine, I accept that. But when they call me a freak, well, that just hurts.

Big hugs to you. The unkind labels, they are given by society, by limitations of environment someone grew up in.

How does one change the norm? Change society? One person, one label at a time I suppose.

Lone wolves also need some belief.

I apologize, nothing wrong with being independent. Becoming independent, being independent, this is definitely one of the stages in life.

Those who are just fine on their own tend to be just fine with others. Wolves make great packs.
