Porn v. Erotica: What's the Difference?

What, if anything, is the difference between porn and erotica? Can it be reasonably said that porn degrades people while erotica doesn't? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'd say "Porn" is the in your face visual while "Erotica", while less visually graphic spurs the "minds eye" to create the visuals and sexual fantasies according to personal taste (which I'd say are much more gratifying than someone elses scripted vision)
Would I rather see a naked woman or a clothed or semi- clothed woman when I first meet her? For myself overall, I'd say a little mystery goes a long way. I'd say that most if not all people have already had sex with somebody they are interested in (in their mind) long before actual physical contact. The thoughts (fantasies) one has had for a week, two weeks months years? of what you'd like to do to that person when you actually did get physically involved can make for some really pleasurable sex, so overall I'd say erotica is much more effective if utilized positively.

Can porn degrade? I would say what is there to find degrading in what most do in their minds and bedrooms anyway.

People's personall boundaries and opinions...I guess that's what I think the difference is. I have a very low 'offensive factor'. Very, very few things offend me or upset me, especially when it comes to sex. So to me, it's pretty much all a beautiful thing.

Is porn used by your, or thought by anyone else to be a term for 'bad' nudity or offensive nudity while erotica is that of art? hmmmmm

I tend to agree, Porn is the undiluted "In your face"(as you so aptly put it) sex, for the sake of sex. Additionally, Erotica (to me) has 'artistic' connotations.

Can porn degrade? My answer is 'yes' but that is because of my perception, based on what I think (based on how I was brought up)......

As concerns the naked or semi naked, I agree without hesitation tha a seductively clad woman 'does' a lot more for me than the same woman naked..Not, OF COURSE, that I have had a chance to test that theory in practice.....:sorry1:

BTW, I claim the right to have recourse to the 5th amendment........

Porn is perceptual, while erotica is conceptual. The perceptual is on the level of animals. The conceptual is uniquely human. This is why we say women are angelic beings by comparison, even lesbian women, because we prefer written erotica to the visual pornography which men hold sacred.

It's like the distinction between "religion" and "cult". It's "erotica" if you get it. It's "porn" if someone else does and you don't.

I reckon the difference is probably in the eye of the beholder. 'Respectable' people probably say they prefer erotica. Porn is so unsophisticated after all.

I agree with what others have said- Porn is all about the act of sex, erotica is a "tease" to tantalize you.

That sounds like an elaborate rationalization of feminine tastes in porn. Little more than elevating one's mere prejudices almost to the level of a metaphysical truth. By your definition of erotica, you could have an utterly degrading piece of conceptual trash that was somehow to be considered "higher" than a decent, perceptual art nude.

I think porn is for dirty old men drinking Bush Beer and smoking cheap cigars. I think erotica is for well refined gentlemen smoking $40 Ashton VSG cigars and washing it down with a nice Napoleonic brandy at $75 a glass. I also think poor people are crazy and rich people are eccentric.

There really is no difference. Both titillate!

Porn is simply marketed erotica.

Erotica is porn marketed to art collectors.
