Hi peeps,

I wrote a novel a while ago and I want to know if something in it works.

Do some blocks of flats have reception-like areas with a person who may monitor who comes and goes or, well, anything like this? Any security crew?

Thanks.

Many condominios here in Brazil do, particularly if they are directed towards the upper class.

Many do in new York, again upper class condos. It's a way of filtering the riff raff.

Here in the states, we have luxury 'blocks of flats' (aka apartment buildings :D) that have reception areas.

I would say it depends on where it's at. I've seen apartment complexes in smaller towns with no gate, security, etc Whereas in larger cities they might have a gate guard and/or an attendant office close to the entrance.

In New York City and especially in Manhattan on the Upper East Side, it is common for there to be a reception area where visitors must wait for whoever they are visiting to come get them after the guard calls. The apartment houses that have security tend to be on the expensive side.

That's how it works around here.
In my small town, there's almost no such security. Up in Indianapolis, medium size city, almost all such residential facilities have at least some.

Hello, gorgeous. Sometimes there is serious security, and sometimes it is a gimmick. For example here in USA many apartment complexes will advertise that they are a 'Gated community'. This means they have an electronic gate code with electric gates. I have lived in such a community, and it is slightly more expensive than apartment complexes without gates. To join such a community you must pay for insurance. To drive into such a community you must enter a code or get a resident to open the gate for you. Such gated communities may house thousands of apartments, however. This means that overall their security is not very good. For example in my 'Gated community' the laundry bill-change vending machine was broken and the coins and cash stolen from it. No one caught the thieves. Additionally the 'Gated' term raises rents and the status of the community, but at times the gates will be locked in an open position. Anyone may drive in or out of the gated apartment complex. There are thefts that go unresolved. I imagine it is the same with communities with reception areas. Everything depends upon how many people live in the community. if it is a large number of people then security must necessarily be lax.

Also sometimes there are very high dollar communities full of mansions. They have electronic gates, but they also have separate entrances for construction personnel. Obviously the appearance of security is more important than actual security.

In China where I lived for 9 years this was the rule for every development including universities and colleges, above the lower class,

Where I live in Hillsborough, NC nonexistent except for some private residents., but in large cities this is more common.

We have "gated communities" where I live that have security crews, cameras, special codes or I.D.s to get into the community. The community is usually upper middle class to lower upper class with houses or condos in the $800,000-$1.5 million dollar range. Usually inhabited by local celebrities/tv personalities/doctors/dentist/college professors etc. Usually they provide amenities like a golf course, tennis courts, a restraunt, stables for horses stuff like that. Some lower middle class communities are similar just with less amenities and smaller houses or apartments even.

Usually cheaper apartments or communities have no security and seldom have any kind of cameras.

Yeah, some do. Apartments or hotels. Nursing homes as well depending on how deranged and twisted you want the novel to be.:p

I've only seen that in hotels really.
I've lived in block of flats before and the closest we had to what you're describing was a phone to each individual flat so that the tennant could speak to any caller before admitting them (that shows you my age - it's probably video now, rather than phone).
These were bog standard flats for poorer people so the ones you are describing may exist in more upmarket flats.
Anyway, I'm a writer myself. You can make up your own reality - the reader will go along with it, as long as it's not unbelievable - and I don't think your idea is. Go with it. :)

Yes.
There are kinds of flats in the UK where persons monitor all tenants.

1: Warden assisted Accomodation. A Warden has an office adjacent to the main entrance with CCTV and/or access control of any rear entrances. All flats have direct communication to and from the Warden.

2: Central Station - Warden Call assisted Accomodation. Remote monitoring of all flats with two way communication to all parts of every flat.

An arrangement that I have seen fairly often involves an access control person whose quarters are next to a small jail with two separate gates, which may be opened by password or by the control person.

This video should give an idea of how it works.

It is frequent for such gates to be surveilled by CFTV as well.

Guard, wow, sounds like a prison.
