Has anyone read Contact by Carl Sagan? &

Has anyone read/seen Contact by Carl Sagan?
And would the 'Vagans' be a good God substitute?

I liked the movie, with Jodie Foster.

Vagans (Vegans?) are Vagans. Do you think they would think they're god? :)

The Vegans never considered themselves God. (Read the book if you have time).

Do people who believe in alien based religions worship the aliens like God?

As is usual, the book has a vast amount of twists and extra info that the movie does not explore. I would recommend it to anyone.

Of course, in some cases, the movie is better than the book, as is the case with LOTR, but I'd say Contact the book is better than the movie.

I listened to Contact on a long drive.
(I don't know what the "Vagens" are.)
The additional material in the book was interesting.

I bet they'd be better than the Vogons.

I've not read the book yet, but the movie is one of my favorites. I think the idea of an advanced alien race being a substitute for God isn't irrational, as "God" is often used in the context of a superior being capable of miraculous actions.

Wouldn't work for me, though. I simply don't feel God as being contained in a single definition.

I too enjoyed the film and believe the possibility that we (humans) are being observed by superior life-forms is quite likely.

The ending was a little disappointing though, possibly the book's different? I'll have to try and pick up a copy.

I preferred the book to the movie, but this may be because the book was fresh to me (I read it prior to seeing the movie)

What? Me worry?
To me there was one glaring gaff in the movie. In the courtroom when the Jodie Foster character was asked if she believed in God I think her reply should have been "Define God".

I believe that the beings are highly advanced, it would depend on one's personal views - Does a more advanced civilization can be worshipped as a Deity since it can perform miracles.
