(Reuters) - A Saudi couple tortured their Sri Lankan maid after she complained of a too heavy workload by hammering 24 nails into her hands, legs and forehead, officials said on Thursday.

Nearly 2 million Sri Lankans sought employment overseas last year and around 1.4 million, mostly maids, were employed in the Middle East.
Many have complained of physical abuse or harassment.

L.T. Ariyawathi, a 49-year old mother of three, returned on Friday after five months in Saudi Arabia.

Her family only realized what had happened to her when she complained of pain and they took her to see the doctor, Foreign Employment Bureau officials said.

"The landlord and the wife of the landlord hammered 24 nails into her when she complained of the heavy workload," Kalyana Priya Ramanayake, media secretary of the Foreign Employment Bureau, told Reuters.

Ariyawathi has been taken to hospital for surgery to remove the nails, which according to the maid were hammered in when they were hot.

X-rays showed one- to two-inch nails in her hands and legs, with one over her eyes, officials said.

The Foreign Employment Bureau is consulting the Attorney-General while the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry is to take the matter up with the Saudi government, officials said.

It seems she is too traumatized to do something at the moment, if the government of Sri Lanka will charge the couple on her behalf, I don't know.

“We have received this complaint from the Foreign Ministry in Colombo, who said the maid has been allegedly tortured by her sponsor,” a senior diplomat from the Sri Lankan mission in Riyadh told Arab News.
“We are looking for the sponsor. We were able to track down the Saudi recruitment agent in Riyadh and we will summon the sponsor to discuss this issue,” the official said.

The 24 nails are “inside the body due to torture meted out by her Saudi employer,” Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, deputy minister of economic development, said in a statement on a government website.
Abeywardena said the government would “report about this matter to the Saudi Government and provide her adequate compensation.”

i don't know what is wrong with these people any more than i know what is wrong with anyone who tortures and/or kills anyone. they aren't any more nuts just because of geography.

i hope this couple fries.

Just to reassure everyone, hammering nails into our workers is not common practice among landlords.
Although....I have had workers who hammered nails into themselves....by accident, of course. (Nail guns seem
to promote carelessness along with efficiency.)

The maid cried a horrible screech!
Let this be a lesson to teach.
If you're to be "nailed"
it might mean "impaled".
Watch out for ambiguous speech.

i'm talking about "these people" as in the couple who hammered 24 nails into their maid's body. i didn't even mention Saudi Arabia. a poster above asked "what is wrong with people" and i said "i don't know, but they're no more nuts than other people around the world"...and that this act is disgusting. :eek:

Why doesn't the Muslim community do something about Saudi Arabia!?

This is going to sound terrible to some but I hope the West completely takes over the East one day - in a hope of putting an end to all the medieval barbarism that continues to be allowed over there.
