What happened to Applebees?

Well, if you think of Applebee's as a great, 4-star restaurant, I'm sure you'll be disappointed. If you think of it as TGIFridays or similar places, it's not bad. Every chain store or restaurant starts out better than it ends up being when it becomes popular. I'm sure the portions have gotten smaller and prices gotten higher, but everyone's prices have gotten higher.

I like Applebee's for what it is. I don't go there a lot, but it's good for a cheap, sit-down restaurant.

I like Friday's but you're right, it sucks compared to what it once was. They've totally changed their menu. My used to be favorites are no more.

I really can't stand what Ruby Tuesday's has done to their menu. And although I can appreciate the new, chic plates and decor, a crappy menu is a crappy menu.

At least...there's the salad bar.

I don't know that I'd say that Outback is "amazing," but as far as chain restaurants go, it's one of the better ones. I like their baked potatoes, their deep fried onion, and the grilled salmon. When I used to eat beef, I thought their steaks were good too, and reasonably priced. Quite tasty, and I've never gotten sick.

Perhaps they use something that you're allergic to, Comet.

I loved Outback (then was conflicted when I learned of their political affiliations), but the closest location closed its doors a few months back.

I've always liked Fridays better than Applebees. The only thing I remember really liking at Applebees was the oreo milkshake. They make a great one (if they still do).

There is a video I have seen which is quite awesome that talks about the differences between liberals and conservatives. Oddly is starts out with an observation about why people would eat or refuse to eat at Applebee's :D
 I don't like the food at Applebee's. Apparently, a lot of people in this thread don't either and they're not all liberals. I prefer Fridays or Outback, and I don't see how that's a political statement. I refuse to go to Friendly's and that's because the food has been inedible the 2-3 times I've tried it. I eat at Mickey D's and Wendy's and other fast food places occasionally. (Too often is bad for your health and the environment.) So quit with the stupid accusations.

What are their political affiliations?

I haven't been to an Outback in a couple of years anyway. I'm not avoiding it. Just haven't gone.

We've got only one Applebee's that's anywhere near us. They're not very common in Canada... or not in my part of Canada, anyhow. My wife and I went there once; it was all right, but nothing to write home about.

Years ago, I went to the T.G.I. Friday's in Niagara Falls, ON (another chain that's not too common in Canada)... I felt like it was permeated with an almost-palpable sadness. It just felt like something was horribly wrong. It's the only time I've got that feeling from a restaurant.

I know a few people who are allergic to MSG; they have to be really careful when they go out to eat. It's in a ton of seasonings, dressings and pre-prepared foods.

What affiliations are those?

Will to love
I never went to Applebee's until we had kids. I agree it's nothing to write home about (for some reason our youngest daughter loved it and always wanted to go there). Chili's used to be better, but I've found them disappointing lately too (I don't think you can even get tacos there anymore!). For family restaurants our latest favorite is Red Robin. The kids love it, good burgers, and a few other pretty good things to choose from.

Outback is OK. I love their coconut shrimp and usually get a filet, mashed potatoes and green beans. But, I must admit I feel like I'm eating a ton of salt whenever we eat there, and Comet it could be MSG or some other specific ingredient that is making you sick.

Chick Fli-A is about a thousand times better than McDonald's. I used to think McD's was OK, but I have been sick the last several times I've had their food. Now just the thought of it makes me ill!

Added: I hear you 9/10ths about TGIF's. It always seemed kind of strained to me, even back in its heyday. Now they always seem kind of seedy and sad.

Chick Fil-A is also considerably more expensive than McD's. Plus, I know Chick Fil-A's religio-political affiliations. They give money to Focus on the Family.

But I agree with you about McD's. I have such fond memories of eating there, including loving the food. But now the food doesn't taste "real" anymore. I don't think that's just because I grew up. I think they've changed the food. For example, the shakes no longer have any dairy in them, which is why they can't call them "milk shakes," only "shakes. The same with KFC. I really do think there are regional differences because the KFCs by me in DC are horrid whereas the KFC in SF, CA served chicken that actually looked and tasted like chicken. I haven't been sick, sick, just a little queasy sometimes.

The only thing I know I'm allergic to is pepper, so I always order stuff unseasoned or with no pepper. (Also why I can't stand Chik-filet! They pepper everything like Fudruckers! YUCK!)

Sorry BalanceFx. I've heard too many accusations of "liberal elitism" and I thought that's what you were referring to. (Obviously, I was wrong. frubals as an apology.) I'm probably over-sensitive in this area because so many of my liberal friends do eat at fancy restaurants and shop only at Whole Foods or their local, over-priced organic farmer's markets and look down on McDonald's, etc. And I don't like it.

No problem mate. While I dont make McDonalds a staple restaurant I see no problem with it. Their happy meals can come with apples now and milk and really are not all that bad. My son doesn't love McDonalds, he often complains he wants to eat in. Occasionally though he will ask to go. I shop at Stop and Shop, the local butcher and... :D the local package store. :D

Like all other places listed here, including TGI Fridays, they changed the menu. YOu can't even get refried beans with an order of fajitas there any more! :areyoucra

Never had a bad Red Robin expirience!

Go with the fish, it won't make you sick! I don't know what it is.... but since I love Chineese food, I'm sure it isn't MSG that makes me sick..... it is their food!

At least they have the trivia game to cover up their "EH" food.

I think we can all agree: Applebee's SUCKS or at best is nothing to write home about.

I wouldn't say it sucks. It's nothing to write home about, sure, but it's not supposed to be. Taken for what it is, it's not bad.

Guess I'm not eating there again. Although I've only ate there once years ago.

Wrong thread, but I would like to know what happened to Chi-Chi's. That was the best eatery EVER.~

As for Applebee's, I have never been much of a fan of any of their food, to be honest.
