Biden Administration Looking At Blocking The Sun?

Seems that someone found a White House document that is considering a study to block the sun to help prevent climate change.
However, the White House says there are no plans to study this.
Wonder what goof ball thought this one up.

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.

Don't have too much high expectations with this bunch. They are not known for their intelligence and foresight which is pretty obvious.

So, (a) the White House is considering a study ...
... while (b) saying that there are no plans to study this.

Yet your CNBC link reports:

The report from the White House says that a research agenda into solar radiation modification would sit next to “the foundational elements of greenhouse gas emissions mitigation and adaptation.” [ibid]

Your thoughtful and dispassionate reporting is much appreciated.

Wonder what goof ball thought this one up.

Clearly not the goof balls that daily consider plans to sabotage LGBTQ+ and women's rights.

So, all you are saying is that the White House is lying when they said their are no plans?
Well one has to take into consideration ones rights to disagree with what you call sabotage
Also wonder if the White House has ever heard of "nuclear winter"

It's a very old idea.
No one recently thought it up.

Are we complaining because the White
House says there are no plans to study it?
Why is it not worth considering?

Well maybe if you block the suns heating of the planet you would also be blocking the earths attempt to shed heat

If you consider the geometry of solar radiation
striking a barrier, & earthbound radiation
escaping, you'll see that there's a difference
in the barrier's effects.
Solar radiation mimics a point source. Escaping
radiation is a very very broad source, so the
barrier's effects are far less on it.

To illustrate the point, imagine a barrier about
the size of the Earth. It could block out all Sun.
But radiation from Earth would have many other
directions to escape.

I don't think it's practical.
But I've no expertise in this area.

On the other hand, let's see if we can have a serious conversation.

So, tell us, @esmith, what do you think are the causes of climate changes, how serious are the likely effects absent human intervention, and what type of intervention would you deem appropriate?

Causes of climate change? Various results from natural causes and people
Interaction that takes everything into consideration, in other words actions taken by man and the affects, both good and bad, resulting from those actions.

Intervention deemed appropriate
Develop fusion power.
Stop the false narrative that fossile fuel bad and alternate energy is good. Both have their place.
Stop attempting to scare people that the earth is in a death spiral.

Neither do I; however how many ideas were put into place, by well meaning bodies, that proved to be a major problem.

"nuclear winter" effect.

Hi esmith

My "What could possibly go wrong??" was meant like this: [irony]What could possibly go wrong??[/irony]

A planetary-scale climate-change project like this appears to have a much higher likelihood of causing a global catastrophe than it does of preventing one.

I agree.
Develop fusion power.
I agree. It's being done but commercialization is a ways off, possibly quite a ways.
Stop the false narrative that fossile fuel bad and alternate energy is good. Both have their place.
One contributes and the other mitigates. The economics are that alternate energy is becoming ever cheaper compared to fossil fuels and there's no reason visible that won't continue. Personally I have a PHEV car because when I bought it the range etc of pure EV was not favorable. But today I'd almost certainly go EV.
Stop attempting to scare people that the earth is in a death spiral.
Fear and anger are everywhere. I agree we'd be better off without them and especially without those who promote it for profit and power. Will you admit that the right is as bad as the left here?
