Patriotic Democrats?

There's something about being a Democrat that generally precludes the sort of naked arrogance to proclaim one's own nation is the very best in the world. Could it be the value placed on human diversity and the appreciation of different ways of being? Or is it the more social orientation of Democrats who have an empathetic concern for the wellbeing of their neighbors?

A good chunk of Democrats voted for the invasion of Iraq. I don't have a particularly rosy view of the Democratic Party, but I do think they're currently much less harmful than the GOP.

Can/should Democrats be openly patriotic? Is it acceptable (or even encouraged) to be a Democrat who believes the US is the greatest country in the world?
If some Democrat is too proud to admit that sometimes our beer is a little watery, then well I say to heck with them.

Currently the USA is the greatest country in the world by the standard of military power. We also have the dominant currency owing to our taxation system, large number of tax payers and international agreement. It is our torturous duty to be the most wealthy, most famous, most envied and least liked nation. Fame is such torment and wealth is such a burden.

I love my watery refreshing beer, thank you!

Speaking as a person who tends to vote Democratic...of course it's possible for a Democrat to be patriotic...it's entirely possible to think the US is a great country, and still recognize that it is not a perfect country...but it's still better than many others in many ways, and worse than others in other ways...and it's much better the way it is now than the way some want to change it...

Our democratic republic form of government is undoubtedly the worst of all possible governments...except for all the rest!

Patriotism is about loyalty. It doesn't have to mean believing one's country is better than another. It's just one accepting their country of origin as their own and then taking responsibility for it's direction and care.
Loyalty and tribalism -- both of which are problematic.
Loyalty should only be to principles, not countries, organizations or people.
Patriotism is nationalism lite, and is usually unwarranted, tribal, hubris.

Principles do come with the territory. They are part of the whole. Without sticking to them and exercising vigilance over them a country just crumbles into useless rubble. Houses don't stand very long without foundations or framework. I agree, there is a tiny blurry line between patriotism and nationalism. There's that troublesome jingoism around there, too.

I'm a Democrat, and I already think the US is the greatest country in the world...

...I also think we can be even better.

You forgot "most criminal" (measured by incarcerated percentage of population).
