There are cases, here in America, where fathers (and church pastors) forbid their daughters from being too highly educated. They are pulled out of public education, forbidden from going to college, and it's all because it's supposed to be the man's job to be the breadwinner, women are supposed to be at home, and they most certainly must not be smarter and better educated than their husbands.
Not mainstream, but not uncommon, and tragically legal until the child is 18.

That will work. I have a friend who as a teenager carried a half brick in her handbag

When my buddy and I were in high school/young adult years, and we wanted to go out in the neighborhood, we had a knife in the boot(we each had matching knee high boots), a blade in our bracelets, and pepper spray down the bra. We only had one can, though, so we took turns carrying it.

Only had to bust the pepper spray out once, and once the would be attacker saw it(the attacker was a woman), she went away rather quickly.

We were on a budget. Our boots cost enough as it was...

You know, I've been replacing that same pair of boots for almost 20 years now?
