The article clearly states they took it down because the store it was above was about to get some nasty collateral damage from people threatening to not go there anymore. They didn't even democratically decide it or debate it or discuss it, they strong-armed their views onto others. The gas station didn't even have anything to do with it, but this angry minority decided it didn't matter, that harming those not involved is not something to be concerned about, and they demanded their views be upheld while other views not be allowed.
And I'll save you the time: "Opinion noted." Even though it's not an opinion. America is not a democracy, we don't govern by "majority rules," it wasn't a majority involved with getting the billboard taken down, and they targeted a business that had nothing to do with it.
