The Cannonization of the Bible

You don't at all have to feel sorry for me, especially since one of the things that I believe about Jesus that some here don't, and that is that I don't go around judging people-- much like Jesus said "Judge ye not...".

Well, you know John 3:16-18. That is why I will pray for you.

It's more than a little disconcerting to see ignorant assertions repeatedly offered with such nonchalant authority. As has been noted more than once in these forums ...
It is not helpful to not know what you don't know.

Funny, I've not come across assertions that the First Council of Nicaea was involved in direct determination of canonical lists, or anything of that nature. And the Voltaire story made me chuckle. As much as I find Voltaire interesting, he's not exactly a reliable source for...well...anything.

But anyways...my reading on Nicaea was always that it was more an attempt to resolve doctrinal deviations amongst Christians, particularly around questions of the Trinity, and how exactly to resolve the concepts of God, Son and Holy Ghost (mostly around whether God created Jesus, or not).

I'd be interested to straw poll casual Christians on that question one day and see how many are actually closet Arians...ahem...

Is that similar to reincarnation?
Slightly similar.

Rebirth = ongoing change, on all levels of reality (eight levels of mental reality, plus various physical realities) which makes up the "self"; Each higher state of reality is more enduring & pleasurable than its corresponding lower states. The "self" manifests itself on a plane corresponding to the self's level of attachment to the various planes.

Reincarnation = an eternal spirit/soul that gets transferred to a new body after physical death.

Sounds deep.

She is specifically asking about the New Testament scriptures, which I don't know why you would care about them.

So I'm only suppose to "care about" Jewish texts? Seriously? And how does the fact that I am a non-Christian bear on the fact that you were simply wrong? Perhaps you should "care about" getting your facts straight. :)

If it didn't get compiled at Nicaea when did it happen?

Alright, I was wrong. It was the Second Council of Trullan in 692 says Wikipedia.
The purpose of the Council of Nicaea was to establish Christian orthodoxy. In other words what is a right thinking Christian, what are the right beliefs? Once the right beliefs are established then the early church was able to decide on the right books to complement the right beliefs. The decision took several hundred years because of the huge volume of books and letters Christians were reading. There is actually more than one cannon. Some of these non-canonical books have been rediscovered in the last 150 years. These books are a valuable tool for historians. These books indicate that Christian beliefs were much more diverse than originally thought. There are other books yet to be rediscovered. Historians only know them by name.

I'd like you to know that I say this as someone who's been hospitalized due to hearing voices and seeing things. Any shame in it is completely on your end.

Sorry to hear that. You should be discussing this sort of thing with your therapist, not some guy on the internet you don't know.
