No Chess in islam.

Chess isn't the only problem.

"Laughter, fun, and joking are permissible in Islam provided guidelines from Quran and Hadith are followed. For humour to be in accordance with Islam, the joke should not insult anyone, should not frighten anyone, should be within the limits of Islamic tolerance, should tell the truth, should not be offensive, should not contain unIslamic material or promote immorality and indecency."
Doesn't sound like much humor is left.
I 'bet' Lewis Black will never go near the place.

If you're the King of a country, you're not "most people". If a King can't distinguish between logic and chance, he's a bad King.

You as King can distinguish between chance and logic.
Most of your subjects have such a rudimentary sense of logic, that the game is mostly chance.

After all, if the leadership is so annoyed as to make it illegal, it must mean that people
are so fascinated by the game that they are not doing their work.

And after all, what is so logical about spending your time playing chess?

Sure the inner workings of the game have profound logic to them,
but the game itself requires that those who are best at playing it,
must dedicate a massive portion of their lives to moving pieces
around a board in what is essentially a pointless trivial game.

You have made some valid points..
However, if a person plays chess occasionally for enjoyment, I don't see any harm in it.
Same with draughts or Monopoly etc.

Serious gambling games such as roulette and poker are in a different category. Interesting to note their association with drink and violence!!!

We have casinos everywhere here. There is no violence at all tied to these.

And people who drink will do so here or anywhere

People can associate one pass-time with other types of behavior.
Anything can become habit-forming and obsessive to the point of danger.
It depends partly on what is in a person's psyche, and partly on external factors such as population pressure.

People in some parts of the world have a strong history of violence while watching sport, for example,
but in other parts of the world there is no such association.

Context plays such a big role, but personal responsibility varies alot from place to place
and from person to person. One size does not fit all.

That's right.

Which makes it obvious how primitive the kings view on chess actually is. IMHO

Much of this comes down to freedom and those who choose to oppress people by any means possible.

But how do you know to what extent his people are being ridiculous about chess?

If two kids are fighting over a toy, and you take it away,
that makes sense, because the kids are not mature enough for the toy.
It has little to do with the toy, of course, and everything to do with their mind-set.

But you take the toy away, and perhaps even blame the toy to try and get them to grow up a bit.

Who cares, if they are ridiculous about chess they will be ridiculous about anything. Do we take away all their freedom or correct the behavior so they play all games nicely. Its not about chess

Chess does not induce bad behavior, bad people induce bad behavior.

It seems far more likely in this case that the King made a knee-jerk, glib, off-the-cuff edict, lumping a game of logic in with games of chance. That in fact we've put a lot more thought into the matter in this thread than the King did.

Chess is never a game a chance. It doesn't matter how you view, what you think of it, chess is a game of skill and logic, it has absolutely nothing to do with chance, and the game itself is fair and equal with the odds inherently favoring neither player (in contrast to any casino game in which the odds are always in favor of the house).
Sure the inner workings of the game have profound logic to them,

Very few people even spend enough time playing it to get good at the game. And what is pointless or trivial about a game that helps to develop logic and foresight?
