Many of these folks have diplomasAnd it's "even more shocking" that half of the illiterate population "somehow made it through public school"
No wonder companies take more stock in GED's than Diploma's.Many of these folks have diplomas
That is an incredibly useful thing to do.Oh, man.
My goal is to become a reading tutor once my younger daughter is in high school and working more independently. Looks like there might be more of a demand than I initially thought.
That's very cool!I just support a local literacy group.

Already did that.....well, just the unions, the city government, the parents, & finally the state for starting the takeover too late for so many kids. The most impoverished major city in the US has an alarmingly large illiteracy problem? Who would have thunk it. I know; let's blame the teachers.
That high of an illiteracy rate is obviously a very deep problem. It may be funding, it may be curriculum, it's a safe bet the parents aren't engaged in their children's education which is a very important factor, it could be a lack of after school tutoring, it could be the teachers aren't motivated or motivating students, and you also have to consider the environment in which a poverty stricken environment usually yields poor education results. I would be willing to bet their is also a drug and alcohol problem in that environment, as that usually follows in the footsteps of poverty and poor education. And of course their is peer pressure, which can have a tremendous impact on how well a child will do in school, or if they make it through school or not. To simply blame the government and teacher unions is very short sited.Already did that.....well, just the unions, the city government, the parents, & finally the state for starting the takeover too late for so many kids.
What are your thoughts on why the education system is failing to such an alarming degree?I'm from Detroit and I read pretty well and on that note, If you aint never been to Detroit, don't ever come to Detroit, because you would'nt understand Detroit, so stay the **** out of Detroit. XOXO
Alot of the kids are'nt going to school, and alot of the parents don't care. The only thing that can save Detroit is people from Detroit. Hopefully we'll wake up one day. What are your thoughts on why the education system is failing to such an alarming degree?
