And a decent education is a western education , always?

WHy , for a very small example, america, the state running without religion has the world's biggest crime rate? what a mystery.

My country has suffered enormously because of religion in its history,we still have the residue of religion hanging around but nobody will be burnt to death at the stake for heresy anymore.

My country is fairly secular and we have, if I remember correctly, a way lower crime rate then the US. You cannot look at just one factor, you know :p.

Of course not saying the west is perfect in any way, no country is, just saying it is not a matter of religion.

Indeed. And it's worth considering that fact that the U.S. population is quite religious compared to many other Western countries, even though the government is secular. And yet many other Western countries, with secular governments AND a secular population, have very low crime. So the facts really don't show any correlation between secular government OR secular population, and crime.

Furthermore, in the U.S. I think the overall crime rate is high because there are a few inner-city "ghettos" and bad neighborhoods with incredibly high crime rates. If you exclude those places I bet the crime rate is much lower in the rest of the country (rural areas, small towns, suburban and commercial areas). I've lived in many places in the U.S. and I can't recall ever personally witnessing a crime.

2. The alqd- is well known to have been formed & trained by CIA, trained UBLaden for several years, and then 'kaboom' he's suddenly 'said' to be from/supported by afganistan, afganis clueless about whats really happening or why.

3. Afganistan's Taliban asked the US to Arrest UBLdn and carry out his fair trial, US said 'We're not interested', Whats all the war about with afganistan when US is not interested in capturing alq- and this pet peeve has a rather strange way of moving to any destination which the Us feels like it should invade, they know he/it has moved here or there, but they can never capture him.
I am not a supporter of the war in Afghanistan, but let's get our facts straight. The Taliban were given a chance to hand over Bin Laden. The deadline came and went and then the Taliban said they would *discuss* handing over UBL *to a third country* if the U.S. provided compelling evidence. They had already said they weren't going to hand over Bin Laden, a well-known international criminal (even the Saudis and Sudan wanted him arrested). This was just a stalling tactic of the Taliban and a way to try to embarrass the U.S.

Hi Not4ME

Thankyou for your response. It is good to see a view point from within the country and culture itself.
Hi there. :)
Just to make sure that you know I am not from Iran, not that being Iranian is a bad thing. :D

I have never heard of Ibn Khaldun in any of my studies (im doing an applied social sciences degree). Which i think is a failure on the universities behalf. We really only get taught western thinking.
I heard that Spain celebrated the 600th anniversary of his death a few years ago.

But i have to say, rejecting knowledge/fact just because it doesn't fit your ideals and values is willful ignorance.
You can't equate knowledge with facts. I have no problem with facts. But I have a problem when other people's values, systems and experiences are somehow supposed to be universal truth and standard that should be praised and followed by everyone else.

Iran also has one of the highest percentages of women that get a higher education in the Middle East. I remember that their elite medical program boasted more than 60% of female students. It's fun to pick and choose certain things about Muslim countries isn't it?

Abibi, I believe the status of women in Iran is much better than the overwhelming majority of the Middle Eastern countries maybe even among the Muslim nations. Women presence is strong in the different life fields from sports to politics.

Would you say Iran is a shining example of a Muslim country or Saudi Arabia, the fact is its easy to pick because theres so much to pick from

I think that a person looking to reinforce their presumptions will find much to pick from. Painting it in one dimensional form however is quite ludicrous.

Not to get too literal or scientific, but how the hell do you paint in one dimenesion?

I agree,Islam is anything but one dimensional but which Islam do we speak of,Islam like Christianity has many facets

I'm not arguing for one side or the other, merely pointing out that each situation and example presented has more than a certain "X" that supports so and so's beliefs. Iran can be looked as a hardline religious government, as well as an economic success that has done well to empower women in seeking higher education and supporting themselves.

Paint was a metaphor for describing the situation in one dimension.

Forget about Islam or any other religion.

"Western" schools of thought?

What a load.

Is there such a thing as a Western School of thought

If there is it must be a subtle difference as opposed to "Eastern" school of thought. And "Oceanic" school of thought. And "Pre-colonial Western" school of thought. And "African" school of thought. And "Penguin" school of thought. That should cover all the continents.

That is a good point. "Western" thought is hardly homogeneous enough to deserve such a name.
