That's right, Jesus was hung on a tree, so where does the idea of a cross come from?
From the bible. I think this has been covered.

Actually, that's just a command. An actual moral statement would be something like "stealing is wrong".
You're reading between the lines to assume that the reason for the command is that stealing is wrong, but that's nowhere in the actual text.
PLease see post #28:That's right, Jesus was hung on a tree, so where does the idea of a cross come from?
Matthew 10:38
and whoever doth not receive his cross and follow after me, is not worthy of me.
Mark 8:34
And having called near the multitude, with his disciples, he said to them, `Whoever doth will to come after me--let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow me;
Mark 10:21
And Jesus having looked upon him, did love him, and said to him, `One thing thou dost lack; go away, whatever thou hast--sell, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, be following me, having taken up the cross.'
Luke 9:23
And he said unto all, `If any one doth will to come after me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me;
Luke 14:27
and whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, is not able to be my disciple.
Those uses sound metaphorical. What do they mean to you?PLease see post #28:
Really? Those uses sound metaphorical. What do they mean to you?
Sorry, I meant where the idea of Jesus being crucified on a cross came from. The NT states he was crucified or hung on a tree.Really?
You asked where the idea of the cross came from.
Seems to me that post #28 sufficiently answers the question.
What difference does it make if they are metaphoric
Do you really think that Jesus wants Christians to actually carry huge crosses on their backs?
Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are trying to get at....
2 Tim 3:16 -- "All Scripture is God-breathed (theopnuestos). . .", from the very mouth (breath) of God.where in the Bible does it say that every detail of our life of faith must be found in the Bible?
You forgot the verse that states the BIBLE is God-Breathed.2 Tim 3:16 -- "All Scripture is God-breathed (theopnuestos). . .", from the very mouth (breath) of God.
Therefore, it is the measure of, and the standard for, all doctrine and practice.
Perhaps it is from verses that indicate Jesus was crucified on a cross?Sorry, I meant where the idea of Jesus being crucified on a cross came from. The NT states he was crucified or hung on a tree.
- Acts 10:39
"We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree,- Acts 13:29
When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
Thanks. You forgot the verse that states the BIBLE is God-Breathed.
Or are you one who confuses the Bible with Scripture?
That would be a pole, which is made from a tree.Perhaps it is from verses that indicate Jesus was crucified on a cross?
Like:
Matthew 27:40One wonders how one carries a TREE on ones back...
and saying, You destroying the temple and building it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matthew 27:42
He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
MarK
15:30 save yourself and come down from the cross!
MarK 15:32
Let Christ the King of Israel now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe. And they who were crucified with Him insulted Him.
LukE 23:26
And as they led Him away, they laid hold on one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country. And they laid the cross on him, that he might carry it after Jesus.
John 19:31
Then the Jews, because it was Preparation, begged Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away, so that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the sabbath. For that sabbath was a high day.
Pehaps God will consult you next time.i think the symbol of an empty cave would be apropos
a cross looks more like a sword...constantine thought that too...
