A rise in anti-religious sentiment on the forums?

Is it just me or has there been a rise in anti-religious sentiment on these forums lately? It seems to have become a common theme in most of the threads I've looked at recently. Has anyone else noticed and been concerned by this?

I've noticed this as well, along with a rise in anti-atheist sentiment. Neither cause me concern as this is debate forum focused on probably the most debatable topic in existence.

Then again, anecdotal evidence is often the result of confirmation bias and selective memory, so it very well may be the same as it always was.

Noticed yes. Concerned no.;)

Partly it may be just the normal changing of the posting population ebb and flow kind of thing.

IF IF there is something more to it it may just be the rise of secularism in general in the US. We have been quiet for a long time. The RR has made a great noise the past few years and continues to do so. They have been more honest and open about what they plan for us and perhaps we are just mad as hell and won't take it anymore.

I have no hard evidence for this and make no strong claim. Just - maybe.

I guess that depends on your definition of religion.

If all of the theists picked up and left to create their own exclusive club, I'd be disappointed. I want to understand their points of view, and theism will be here for a very long time I think, so we have to be able to get along. I don't want anyone to take their ball and go home.

I define it rather broadly, as basically a set of general beliefs adhered to by a group of people.

I will grant that most of the anti-religious sentiment seems to be directed at extremism/fundamentalism, however this sentiment also seems to come from people who assume that extremism/fundamentalism defines religion. As such they speak of religion when they really mean to specify extremist/ fundamentalist religious sects. So the end result is the same.

Does this address the point you were trying to make or did I miss it entirely?

Neither do I. I came here for that very reason, to understand other people's points of view. It just seems like there are several here who have no interest in understanding other views, just in expressing their own, and that number seems to be rising. Perhaps it was disingenious of me to specify anti-religious sentiment as this forum has certainly had it's share of anti-atheist sentiment, it's just that I haven't come across that as much recently as I have anti-religious sentiment. But then again it could be selective bias based on the threads I've been in recently. Who knows

Well that is very noble but also foolish. I should live so long as to see them take their ball for a lo-o-ong walk on a short pier.

btw, here is the latest example of "faith" in action here in the USA. I have g/c and g/g/c who will live with this crap. :( It ain't no parlor game to me.

Well, that sure is some dumb crap. I really am sad when I see stupidity like that stuff going on, trust me, I'm with you on that. But, I think there is an underlying problem there which is not religion itself, insufficient scientific literacy. Sure religion makes it harder to spread scientific literacy at times, but in fact I think ignorance is the real culprit behind that terrible (terrible indeed) state of affairs.

Co-incidentally, I happened to watch an illegal copy (I won't give him my money) of Ben Stein's Expelled. Wow. That was really a shame indeed. It really bothers me that someone could be so deceiving. I used to respect him, but I don't anymore at all. He broke all the ethics of journalism in that awful movie. I was very disappointed in him.

I haven't been on a lot lately to notice anything. My impression is that the proportion of non-theists is now a lot higher than when I joined. Anti-religious feeling is higher in that group. I am concerned at anti-religious opinions since I often find they are expressed in offensive ways. I'm anti-religious to a degree, but I'm sure I can chat without using hostile or ridiculing terms and phrases.

I could make a strong argument that ignorance and dogmatic religion are one and the same.
