Tired of being called a sinner?

Maybe I'm just having a bad day, but I am really getting tired of being labelled a sinner just because I don't believe in religions definition of God. Is it just me or is anyone else tired of the slogan, we are sinners and we must repent or be sent to hell for eternity. Why do people believe this stuff and why do they think it's alright to tell others this stuff too. Don't they see how hurtful and condescending this is? Sorry, but I'm really tired of the label my family and others give me and other's like me. Usually I'm pretty upbeat about it and let it slide off my back, but today it's getting to me a lot.

NEVER!!!

Well, tbh, it has never been a big issue in my life, I dont think anyone has ever said that to me here, and if they have I would feel a sense of achievement.

If I were you I'd move. I haven't had anyone accuse me of being an evil, Satan-spawn temptress since I moved away from Alberta, where all the Christian fundamentalists live.

People here are pretty good, I don't think I've been called one here. There have always been posts that allude to that but not outright accusations. It happens more in my life outside of RF and most of the time I think its a good thing. But when it comes from family it gets a bit more personal I guess. Oh well I'm sure I'll get over it, again. Thanks for the good perspective Caladan, it likely is a compliment in a way.:)

You lived in Alberta? Where? I wasn't aware there were lots of Christian fundamentalists in Alberta, I thought they all lived in Sask.

Here's what you do Challupa;

when someone calls you a sinner go, "OH MY GOD!!! I'M A SINNER!!!! WHAT SHOULD I DO"!?!!

they'll inadvertanly say some version of, "You must repent"!

Then tell them, "I CAN'T REPENT!! HOW CAN I REPENT!?! I HAVEN'T EVEN PENTED YET! HOW THE HELL CAN I REPENT IF I HAVEN'T PENTED YET"!?! (note: be sure to look as guenuinely concerned about all this as possible)

They'll start to say something to get you to calm down and listen to thier shpeel--DON'T LET THEM. Instead, throw your hands in the air, start backing away from them and tell them, "I HAVE TO GO!!!! I HAVE TO GO PENT BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE"!!!!

Then runaway, looking frantically from left to right for a good place to pent.

Crazy as it sounds, that would actually work at least nine times in ten.

In my opinion, the whole complex notion that life -- or at least spiritual life -- revolves around a god's judgment of humanity as sinful and humanity's consequent need to repent has misdirected the spiritual efforts of countless millions.

LOL thanks for the laugh I needed that. It wouldn't work with my family cause they fully know I know what they are going on about. However, It be real fun to do sometime.

Yes I'm sure that 's true. I have not believed that stuff since I was quite young. Always got me in trouble of course. It's probably what turned me away from religion because it just didn't seem right.

Aye a starting point of being a 'sinner', is somewhat strange. too much guilt in many theologies, and it has been a burdern for many people.

for me, being a sinner, means being at ease with my natural self and not being afraid of exploring life in all its glory, im a sinner, and I wear this label as a badge of honor :D

Frankly, when I hear someone call people sinners I usually loose at least some faith in their powers of insight into human nature. The notion strikes me as -- at very best -- a half truth. On the other hand, there are a few people who have taken that fundamentally shallow idea and turned it into something a lot more sophisticated than it was ever meant to be. Got to give them credit for ingenuity, but their efforts do often seem to me as if they are strapping a jet engine on a Model T frame. Of course, that's just my impression.

That's a very good point Sunstone. When I get called that it creates an even greater wedge between us. Trouble is they truly believe what they're saying. I am a target because I wasn't raised in the family. I found my biological family and they were fundamentalists and it was quite a shock with me being an atheist for most of my life, probably for both sides. My children are also atheists so it makes life rather interesting at times.:D

Although I enjoy others opinions of me and my work I have been alive long enough to know when it is a false complement or false lie.

Being labeled a sinner is just false lie. They have no legitimit responce for you so they just call you a sinner. That applies to 4 letter words, murderer, baby killer, something like infantilist which for my opinions on certain religious taboo's I have been called. I actually feel sorry for the person calling me the name. They are making a statement about who they are not who I am.
