Why is it important for Britain to improve diplomatic ties with Russia

Is there some imminent threat or danger to international security in the absence of diplomacy to improve relations between the two countries?

I hope Britain is trying to improve relations with Russia........ and Iceland....... and the Philippines...... and everywhere else. It makes sense to improve diplomatic relations?

There is only war as the eventual alternative. Britain can't afford to go to war anymore (it being a superpower in decline), and Russia shouldn't go to war anymore (it being a past-and-future backwards nation).
