Why Can an Ant Survive a Fall From a Skyscraper But an Elephant Can't? Science!

I'll have you know, Terese, that I am a card-carrying member of SETEOS, the Society to End the Throwing of Elephants Off Skyscrapers, and I certainly cannot approve of this thread! It appalls me that you seem to be encouraging the barbaric practice of "elephant pitching". Tut! Tut! Terese! Tut! Tut! To claim, as you do, that it's "all in the interest of science" does little to mask the fundamental inhumanity of the act! I tell you, you must cease at once! END THE MADNESS!

It's pretty obvious.
Consider that as a critter doubles its height (assuming width & depth each also double) the cross
section of muscles increases to only a factor of 4 (square of the dimensional increase), while weight
increases to a factor of 8 (cube). So relative strength goes down by 2 (cube divided by square).

Elephants can climb, but they don't know how to get down again. That's why they can't survive falls from skyscrapers.
