Was it really that important?
Britain didn't think it was they had bigger fish to fry against the French.
If you look at it from a lives loss point of view then America lost, but the death toll wasn't that large at all so this isn't really much of an indicator. Yet at the same time nothing at all really changed, seems more pointless than most wars to me.
^ There's an alternate version by the Arrogant Worms (a Canadian band)
Goes something like:
Oh, we fired our guns and the Yankies kept a-comin'
There weren't quite as many as there were awhile ago
We fired once more and the Yankies started runnin'
Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico!
Yeah, we sing it like that in Texas too.
Gotta love Confederates.
It was me. I won the war of 1812.
A mere technicality. Besides, apart from the Battle of Baltimore and Dolley Madison's rescuing the portrait of George Washington while Washington was burning, it's the only event of the war that we care to remember. And I'm not sure if Jackson's victory at New Orleans really "counts". The war was over already.

And it gave me one of my favorite details of my family history. One of my ancestors claimed to be haunted by the ghosts of "the bloomin' Henglish" killed at New Orleans.
The Brits were marching through the city, and parts of the city were already burning. She's said to have left the White House just minutes before the British soldiers got there.Dolley Madison rescued the portrait while Washington was still burning? I was under the impression the British would arrive shortly and she was the last person to leave because she was trying to save the portrait.

I only started learning about Canadian history a few years ago, so I find it very interesting. When I was in school, the last thing we learned about Canadian history was the defeat of Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham. Recently, I've learned that many things have happened in Canada since then.Man, I gotta get more into American history. It's a lot more interesting than Canadian...
