I remember the book series "Imponderables" by David Feldman would discuss in the appendices an ongoing saga about why we often see only one shoe on the side of the road. It's a mystery, to be sure.

Because kids throw them out the window while you're driving.

I speak from experience.

I only wear two shoes myself. If you see anyone wearing any more than that, that would be a rare sighting.

You can wear two pairs of shoes in German speaking countries. We call gloves "hand shoes".

I wonder if @JustGeorge lost the second brown shoe as well. I happen to have two brown shoes that are moccasins. If she wants them back, someone tell her that she has enough Indian clothing.

I don't know if anyone did back in those days. Strange times, they were. But they've left an indelible influence on the way things are now.
