It pesumably would have been quite OK, even in Russia, to critique the immaculate conception upon a valid theological basis (for there is one, i.e. the heresy of the Augustinian notion of original sin and the inference also that Mary's parents must have been immaculately conceived too, etc, etc, back to the time of Adam); but when combined with denying the existence of Jesus, it just shows you up as a moron, and morons invite punishment.

Why should an atheist have to use theologies of religions they don't believe in to explain why they don't believe in the Immaculate Conception, that Jesus or Muhammad existed or giving an "offensive description of Patriarch Kirill"? Would you be content with using Islamic theology to explain why you don't believe Muhammad was ever a prophet of God in the face of legal punishment?

This is just a blasphemy law being used to defend bold, empty claims from criticism or even dissent.
