Book smart is the result of knowledge gained though research and education. Street smart is a result of knowledge gained through experience.

At best, the two things compliment each other. To have one without the other is often enough a cause of misfortune.

Book smart knows what others have put in writing before, certainly important as we can see from people who make the mistakes that books would have helped them avoid.

Street smarts, is like being wise to living in the city and knowing it's routines, what places to go to, what to avoid, where to find some type of people or things. People who don't have any of that stand out in a crowd and depending on how safe the place they are in could get in trouble.
