I don't know if this has been oberved in monitors before, but parthenogenisis is a common reproductive strategy in much of the animal world.

Parthenogenesis has been produced in mice and birds.

For some species it is the only way of reproduction, for others it is just the best choice of several options. Rotifers and "Water fleas" for example can reproduce both by sex and by parthenogenesis.

Sexual reproduction is only one of many Natural reproductive strategies, and certainly not the most common one.

It's not an "evolutionary twist" it's something that wasn't observed in that species before. Many reptiles have this ability and komodo dragons are just one of them.
