This article in Science News highlights research which suggests that "sudden" increases in the availability of planetary oxygen may have arisen out of the "evolution" of chemical availability as various geological and atmospheric and hydrological cycles progressed.
This suggests that even as living systems were evolving so too were pre-living systems and in ways not strictly resulting from biological processes.
