The Mar-a-Lago search and IRS funding spur defund-the-police calls — on the right

DEFUND THE FBI!
— Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (@RepMTG) August 9, 2022

Any use of governmental force — from arrests to searches to financial reviews — should be conducted with transparency and evenhandedness, something that demands our collective oversight and scrutiny.

But it is impossible not to notice how the response to the Mar-a-Lago search and the IRS expansion reveal the gulf in what sorts of oversight Americans fear. Black Americans in particular have drawn focus in recent years on how police departments apply force, including deadly force, prompting the political right to largely circle the wagons in defense of cops. When, however, the cops work for the IRS or target a popular Republican political figure — even one with a lengthy track record of blurring legal lines — that reflexive support evaporates. Instead, there’s default skepticism and concern about systemic problems. Which, for the original supporters of “defund the police” will seem familiar.

"The additional $80 billion in spending is projected to yield $124 billion in revenue through better enforcement. But, for obvious reasons, Democrats are eager to make clear that only higher-income Americans will see more frequent audits."

That is a pretty miserable return. These IRS agents
don't net much more than they cost. There's no real
benefit, given that the ostensible net profit is $44B,
which would likely be exceeded by CPA & lawyers
cost to the taxpayers audited. Our tax policy is an
expensive & complicated mess.

It is vastly more complicated for those who have wealth and want to avoid paying their fair share of tax. As we see the middle class ays a higher overall percentage than the rich. The rich have made sure they support republicans who *** tax laws that allow them the loopholes to pay less in tax. I remember Romney admitted his tax was around 10-11% while the average middle class person pays about 20%

Democrats have been in on forming that tax policy too.
They too have imposed upper limits on payroll & self
employment taxes, which are highly regressive.
This benefits their high earning Hollywood celebrity
supporters.

A few have, but not as a policy and platform. The democrats as a platform want less tax burden on the poor and middle class and more on the wealthy. The republicans such back with the usual nonsense of "taxing the rich will kill jobs" as if that is a true claim. The Deficit Reduction Act that adjusted tax rates on corporations had ZERO votes by republicans in the senate and was carried by all democrats and Harris.

They too have imposed upper limits on payroll & self
employment taxes, which are highly regressive.
There is a difference between voting a compromised tax and advocating for it. Democrats are advocates of more balanced and fair tax policy even if they have to compromise at times.

Sure, Dems say that. But what happens when
they have both Congress & the presidency, eh.

Like now? And the bill I just referred to? The Trump tax law of 2017 did lower rates on everyone. It just gave more cuts to the wealthy, and as a result the deficit has grown. This bill acts to adjust taxes on corporations to help pay off our debt. Democrats know not to bite off too much at once. Dealing with Manchin and Sinema has its limits.

Sure, Dems & Pubs differ on tax policy.
But not to the extent you think. They too
cater to their major donors & advocates,
eg....
Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren want to tax CEOs who make 50 times more than their typical worker
Notice how they don't want to tax movie
stars with such an income ratio?

This is, of course, hijacking a thread for a different rant. The point of the thread was THE RIGHT WANTS TO DEFUND THE POLICE.

The title on the piece is misleading...

This isn’t the left’s “defund the police.” It’s the right’s “stop the FBI.” It’s the GOP’s explicit opposition to boosting staff at the IRS."

They're so full of hypocrisy it's just not surprising. Whatever happened to their "if you aren't doing anything illegal why worry?" They don't actually believe that, they just spew it to try to make others look bad and like they are hiding criminality. They call themselves pro-life but are pro execution, shoot outs, and consistently vote to take away things people need like medicaid or food stamps and they even get so nasty they're coming after the retirement money, deriding it as an entitlement program despite the fact it's paid into out of the worker's own paychecks.

Yes...but notice the wording...

1) Not 'defund the police' but defund the FBI
2) Not "the right" but rather "one political" figure from the GOP
3) Not party wide as "defund the police" was... but a single voice.

A hit piece IMO

The Cult was out there smiling, blasting music, etc. As if to celebrate the FBI raid.
Weird people. Poorly informed. Easily manipulated by their media and their Cult leader

Don't forget the net worth of top level Democrats in Washington.

I'd wager they wouldn't jeopardize their personal wealth whatsoever over people like you and me. Ever.

False equivalence.
Republicans don't want taxes on Corporations, Democrats do.
Republicans are all about corporate policy, Democrats are about worker policy.
It's that simple.

It seems to be the same basic dichotomy: The Democrats tend to oppose state and local police while supporting federal police, while the Republicans have been mostly the opposite - supporting state and local police while opposing federal agencies. It was a similar contrast in reactions back 30 years ago, comparing the reactions to the Rodney King incident versus the reactions at Ruby Ridge and Waco.

I think it's the politicians' way of playing "good cop"/"bad cop."

OK Mr false equivalence.
Republicans hate unions. (corporate policy)
Republicans hate wage increases (corporate policy)
Republicans hate affordable healthcare/drugs (corporate policy)
Republicans hate corporate taxes (corporate policy)
Republicans hate climate science (corporate policy)
It goes on and on and on and on.
