The Kindness Box

Try - happiness helping others - for example -

If we can make an effort to shift the focus away from ourselves and our circumstances, we often find more joy. Why does this happen? It happens because when we focus on others, our problems, needs and wants stop taking center stage in our life. We realize that we are not alone in our trials. We start to see the needs of others and recognize the bigger picture.

Looking beyond yourself is why it’s important to not be isolated. The more people we talk to and get to know, they more stories we learn. I know people who are so isolated from others that the issues of their world become all-consuming. On the other hand, the people I know who spend time listening to others, getting involved in the lives of those around them and using their time to help people are happier.

There are many ways to look beyond yourself. Getting to know others, making an effort to show interest and be involved in your community, educating yourself about an issue you are passionate about and exploring how you can make a difference. All of these things will help take the focus away from yourself.

The idea that helping others is part of a meaningful life has been around for thousands of years. Aristotle wrote that finding happiness and fulfillment is achieved “by loving rather than in being loved.” According to the psychologist Carol Ryff, who reviewed the writings of numerous philosophers throughout history, relationships with others are “a central feature of a positive, well-lived life.”

Yet today many of us seem to be struggling to find meaning by gathering up achievements, spending so much time at work that we’re cut off from other people.

How Educators Can Help Make a Kinder World

“Education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society,” wrote Martin Luther King Jr. in 1947. “The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals.”

In recent decades, research has lent support to his argument. With our new scientific understanding of the social, emotional, and ethical development of students, I think we can safely say that academic achievement alone no longer counts as a “successful” education. The work of educators shapes human beings—which means that education helps shape our world.

A teen in Wisconsin knew just what to do when she won a free car, immediately handing over the keys to a friend and Chick-fil-A colleague who had been biking almost 7 miles to the restaurant each way.

Winters are chilly in the Green Bay State, and Hokule’a Taniguchi’s bicycle was her only mode of transportation to the chicken chain.

The 19-year-old had been peddling from her Neenah home to the Appleton restaurant — about a 7-mile bike ride each way.

"I was biking here every morning, so it was a little rough," Taniguchi explained. "Because I’m from Hawaii, I was like, ‘It’s kinda cold!’"

Good news kindness

The kindness flags are flying in full force these days! Countless acts of kindness—small and grand—are coming from every corner of the country. We’ve seen distilleries making hand sanitizer from their supplies of alcohol, grocery stores offering special shopping hours for seniors and at-risk populations, 32 great charities helping those struggling amid the COVID-19 crisis and the youngest members of the royal family clapping for health care workers.

By helping others you’ll also feel more thankful for your own situation or your advantage by comparison. You might for example feel grateful that you’re not currently dealing with a major illness, a relationship breakdown or money worries.

Or perhaps you are dealing with some of those same difficulties, but by helping others you might just get a welcome distraction. Your focus can shift from you (and your own struggles) to somebody else.

Helping others and perhaps volunteering for a worthy cause can also develop your skills, abilities and give you that sense of control over your life. Volunteering is also associated with reduced depressive symptoms!

Plus, you might strengthen old or new friendships and feel liked by other people. You’ll also get the feeling that others appreciate you and your kind acts and that feeling is priceless.

What kids think about kindness -

It can be hard to show kindness in our daily interactions—for us, as well as for our kids. Even though we are hardwired for kindness and empathy, we can be hampered by the busyness in our lives or by more negative influences in the world, like bullying, intolerance, hate crimes, and more.

In our book, The Kindness Advantage: Cultivating Compassionate and Connected Children, we help parents and grandparents uncover their children’s compassionate qualities by introducing ten fundamentals of kindness and sharing practical, concrete suggestions to help you and your child practice kindness in everyday life. By cultivating kindness in our children, we can benefit them as well as their communities.

A 2001 study found that regular volunteering increases happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and sense of control over life. And it works for young and old alike: black inner-city teens who tutor younger children have more positive attitudes toward the self, others, their education, and the future; and elderly people who volunteer are more satisfied with life.

In this TEDx talk, Botlhale Tshetlo explains how gratitude led her to perform 38 random acts of kindness for her 38th birthday, and the impact it had on her:

Showing altruism benefits both the receiver and the giver. As Feb 17 is Random Acts of Kindness day, Calvin Holbrook shares some great ideas for paying it forward: spread joy with these 22 inspiring random acts of kindness.

Originally founded by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation in 1995, the idea behind the annual random acts of kindness day has grown in popularity recently. It's celebrated by individuals, groups and organizations worldwide, to encourage acts of kindness and spread happiness through communities. Indeed, the day represents 24 hours when people have the chance to focus on spreading love and joy to as many people as possible – even total strangers.

But why bother? Well, the benefits of showing kindness in such an altruistic way are many. Indeed, being kind is not just beneficial to the person on the receiving end of the good deed. In fact, showing kindness lead to scientifically-proven positive feelings for the giver and receiver.

More suggestions -

1. Smile and say hello to everyone you cross paths with. I do this with everyone I see and it’s always great when someone does it back.

2. Hold the door open for someone.

3. Donate items from your home. Another thing you could do is donate an item for each item you bring home. So, each time you buy a shirt, donate a shirt!

If we want to increase our happiness and well-being, we need to engage in acts of kindness that feel right for us. For example, let's say Jane decides to be kind by volunteering at a women's health clinic. If Jane is pro-choice, this might make her feel great. But if Jane is pro-life, this type of kindness and volunteering might make her feel awful. All this is to say that before engaging in acts of kindness, we should take a moment to think through what kindness means to us and what types of kindness would make us feel good.
