many religions have their holy books, writings, but what do they cover?

what is hidden in plain sight?

“The narratives of the Doctrine are its cloak. The simple look only at the garment — that is, upon the narrative of the Doctrine; more they know not. The instructed, however, see not merely the cloak, but what the cloak covers.”
(The Zohar, iii., 152; Franck, 119.)

“The Mysteries of the Faith (are) not to be divulged to all. . . . . It is requisite to hide in a mystery the wisdom spoken.”
    (Clem. Alex., “Strom.” 12.)

In bygone days I devoted myself to the vinaya and also delved into the sutras andshastras. Later, when I realized that they were medicines for salvation and displays of doctrines in written words, I once and for all threw them away, and searching for the Way, I practised meditation. Still later I met great teachers.

Then it was, with my Dharma Eye becoming clear, that I could discern all the old teachers under heaven and tell the false ones from the true. It is not that I understood from the moment I was born of my mother, but that, after exhaustive investigation and grinding discipline, in an instant I knew of myself.

I remember a rabbi stating much the same concerning the Torah; 'they see only the outer garment'.

All originates in spiritual world. All comes from it and all comes back in it. Nature of Christ in us.

is dhamma something that is separate from us? are we only under the law, the power, or can we be within the law vs subject under the dhamma?

yes, i still agree from a subjective point it is a thing but how the word, the noun we use only describes what it looks like; which is its form. i'm asking what is it's action, it's behavior?

how do we know when we are within those parameters vs outside the law?

When we create suffering for others then we do not act upon dhamma. But all actions have an reaction, so you can say when we create suffering for others our action is creating karma toward our self. But when we do follow dhamma and do good action, speech and thoughts this create virtue

Everything is inside the Law. Dharma is all the universal truths. By accepting our nature, we find our proper place in the universe. Now, to make sure we stay in the proper parameters, there is karma. Karma is how we form the world.
