Some Thoughts On The Rules

More came to mind after that thread closed.

There is a point system for infractions.
This is a big problem because if I have
some, I can't view them as I could before.
If I'm at risk of severe knuckle rapping,
I won't know it, & won't be able to be
extra careful until they expire.

Unspoken rules should be formally stated.
They've changed over the years, & it's hard
to know when rules are added or dropped.

The Summary Of RF Rules could be more
explicit, than merely listing topics.

I know. I don't remember exactly when members lost the ability to see their own records but it sucks.

Just one of the many 'upgrades' we've had to endure in recent years.

If you want I can take a screenshot of your infraction record and send it to you.

The rules of remain fundamentally the same for a long time. The text of the roles has been rewritten a couple of times, but there haven't been many if any actual changes.

That said, I know the lines shift and have shifted somewhat overtime. What amounts to crossing a line now isn't exactly the same as it was a few years ago or a few years before that.

I think in order to do that we'd basically have to write a handbook.

In my opinion, the rules page is too long as it is. Probably why most people don't bother to read it.

Hell, I'm impressed when somebody actually manages to read the entire title of a rule.

I don't feel the need.
Should I feel the need?
(I've been especially brutal lately.)

A staffer once told me that pix of bare chested
men were a violation. It was never listed in the
rules. But that appears to be no longer enforced.
There have been others, but I don't recall them.

There's been talk of a style book.
That could be useful to many.

It does seem ripe for trimming.

No worries. You're still in the shallow end of the pool. :D

I think they made a mistake there. It comes down to our needing to keep things PG-13 or below in order to qualify for our Google ad status.

Bare chested men are well within bounds (whether or not beer-chested women should be is a matter of geo-specific mores).
It was never listed in the
rules.

I think that even if somebody did undertake writing a handbook, they still wouldn't be able to mention every single possible violation of a rule.

It would be like the rules of the road saying: "Speeding is against the law. Therefore you can't go 56 in a 55.
You also can't go 57 miles an hour in a 55.
Same thing goes for 58 (in a 55).
59 as well.

Which is why I think you're the guy who's best qualified for writing the handbook.

If the handbook is a hit I'll help you turn it into a screenplay.

A style handbook needn't deal with everything.
All it needs to do is convey a sense of propriety to strive for.

I've already started writing a handbook.
But I'm stumped after the first sentence....
"Bow down before me, ya poodle fluff'n turkey stuff'n,
lawn bowl'n, laundry fold'n crotchelfester doily monger!"

I thought the rules already did that.

And if not, we have this: Member Survey: Overhauling the Rules' Text

That would make a catchy title though.
