Should incest be banned?

wouldn't it put an element of doubt into your mind that this friend of yours had some kind of personality disorder?

I mean seriously, would you really view the friend in the same way if this were going on?

I wouldn't for sure.

Yeah, and I think we've already established that you're a prude who thinks that anything illegal is therefore wrong (and that if riding a see-saw was illegal, there'd be something wrong with that too) and that you get your morals from an old holy book, and that if you think something is wrong, you'll go to any ends to justify that opinion.

I will ask you the same question as Zoe:

If you had a sister and she asked you for sex what would you do and how would the question make you feel?

As for holy book - do I detect some anti Christian prejudice here?

Honestly, I couldn't say. Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the reason she was asking and my relationship with my sister.

But I think you're stupid if you think that I must be willing to do everything that I think should be legal. It's legal to eat oysters, but I'd never have one. And yet I firmly believe that people should be allowed to eat them if they want.

You see, martin, a person can support the legalisation of something without necessarily wanting to participate in that thing.

more than needy - just outright weird in my book!

So then feel free to decline any and all offers of sex you get from close relatives.

But if that's all you've got - the fact that you are uncomfortable with the idea - then it is the height of arrogance for you to assume that you can use YOUR morality to dictate rules and laws for other people.

If you had a brother, and he were to ask you for sex, what would you say?

How would it make you feel?

I'd consider it, the actual answer would depend on what our relationship was like and whether I felt any sexual chemistry with him. Just typical huh, I actually only have two sisters.

As for how it'd make me feel that depends on the context of him asking, as it does when anyone asks for sex.

If a mom and son, cousin and uncle, etc. love each other then why ban it? For example, Queen Victoria, of the British Empire, loved Prince Albert, her cousin I believe, dearly, but when he died in 1861 she was depressed. So depressed that she stayed out of the public eye for over a decade.

well, not sure if you've read much of this thread but the ban is because it's immoral, depraved, leads to genetic abnormalities and in many cases can be a form of sexual abuse. - need any more reasons?

As for Prince Albert I can't really see how that piece of information brings much to the debate - incest with cousins is just about acceptable though fairly distasteful.

that is a very vague and non-committal answer, though to be expected no less.

do you see incest as normal behaviour?

Of course it's not normal, if it was it'd be widespread and legal. But normal is a relative concept, something that changes over time and by location.

Well I see "incest" as any regular form of relationship. Just because it's between Jeff and his Mom, or Erica and her Dad should not make it "depraved" or "immoral".

Regular relationships can lead to sexual abuse just like incestual relationships.

Well isn't that a double standard?

Oh, yawn, the same tired arguments over and over again!

Only you would expect reality to be black and white. The rest of us realise that there are infinite shades of grey and that with an issue like this, we can't make a single judgement that applies to every single possibility.

I think we should legalise non-harmful, consensual behaviour.

Martin, you have to realise, space travel is abnormal behaviour. You seem to be equating "abnormal" with "Harmful."

I wasn't sure if Qymaen had read much of the thread so I was just giving him a quick review.

As for black and white , it is to be like this here because we are talking about law. ie: ban or legalise.

So on balance a decision has to be made - clearly black and white.

The banning option seems to outweigh the legalisation one.

You see incest as regular a form of relationship.

same question for you then - would you have an incestuous relationship with your sister and if not then why?

non-harmful is difficult to define because of various indirect consequences.

we have already discussed the strange case of necrophilia which never really led to any satisfactory conclusions.

how about drug abuse and possession of certain kinds of pornography - arguably not directly harmful to others but banned for good reason (in my view)

I would not because I am not attracted to her. "Incest" is okay with me, but pedophilia is not.
