Saudi Women Now Fully Liberated!

From the article:
"The official says women may not use the bikes for transportation but “only for entertainment'' and that they should shun places where young men gather “to avoid harassment.''"

Hmmm, funny - it seems even if you cloth a woman in a large bin bag, she will still be the victim of harassment from men. Perhaps it's time Muslims focused less on what the women were wearing, and more of the behaviour of the men.

Very true.

Wow...... Indiana sounds like a backward State.

For instance, Iowa has legislation for full equality already, covering race, religion, creed, colour, nationality, disability, gender, marital status, age oh, the whole lot. I've seen the list on an RF thread posted by a staff member.
Indiana's a fine state. I'd rather live there than IL, NY, NJ or the
other more thuggish states. (Snowboarding is lousy in IN though.)

What does Indiana have to do with anything? And if you want to argue how "backwards" we are, do you want to compare what this state has compared to yours? We may not have the top ivy league colleges, but for a backwards state we do have some leading universities, research institutes, and even corporations.
Just because the state typically votes Republican doesn't make it a social conservative nut-state. Indianapolis even has laws protecting gender identity if that says anything about how backwards it is. Yes, we're the harshest in the nation with drugs (hopefully changing soon but the Tea Party governor and DOC is against it), the last in the union to allow alcohol sales on Sunday, but when you compare here to other states we're really not too far right-of-center.

It's got nothing to do with laws; in fact, that's what separates Western culture from Middle-Eastern culture in terms of gender.

Over there, it's still present in the law. Here, it's not present in the law much at all, but it's still very much present in American culture. Just look at the media and its constant insistence that women HAVE to be a certain image of sexiness, or they may as well not exist.

We culturally encouraged very strictly-defined gender roles back in the post-WWII years (if the various PSAs from the era are any indication). It's going to take quite a long time to fully get away from cultural sexism in these lands.

So, while we're further along in terms of gender equality than many places throughout the world, we do still have a loooooong way to go.
