Okay. I've been using running apps and when I started off years ago, I could run at least 13-14 pace per mile (going up hill). During winter I stayed ground level, with shorter hills (we have them everywhere), and now as its getting warmer, I got 9:55 pace average per mile twice in a week. So the improvement paid off in those couple of years. So, this morning, I ran 2.7 miles.

I tried Strava for the first time, and it said:

    Average pace 6:13 per mile
Average elapsed pace per mile 15:23

    Moving time 14:36
Elapsed time 36:05 (because of mini walks and traffic light stops)

    Fastest split 2s per mile

    Legend:

Pace-how fast I ran per mile-smaller the number, the faster
Elapsed pace-how fast I was moving the whole time

Moving time-how long I was active
Elapsed time-how long the app was running

    Okay.

How on earth did I get from 9:55 pace on one app two times last week to 6:13 this morning on Strava?

Did I actually do 6:13 per mile and the difference of elapsed time was my second mile pace?

Just want to make sure I'm reading this right because I'm happy I did 6:13 per mile (just got to work on it) but don't want to fool myself, ya know?

My dyscalculic butt dont know why I clicked... I saw math in the title. But I dont see the math I am supposed to do? Am I slow or what? Eh if I attempt any math anyway I'd mess it up.

Just basic subtraction. Good luck on finding which one's to subtract, though.

We have to understand some of the definitions better. Are these two numbers saying:

    - from start to finish, UA went 2.7 miles in 36 minutes
    - during those 35 minutes, UA was running for only 14 minutes, and the rest of the time she was resting?

Ow my head. I just use a cheap watch with a stop watch :)
That seems an unrealistic improvement. If it was real I'd have thought you'd notice the difference: wow I was a shuffler* and now I'm like Usain Bolt! 6:13 is serious motoring, unless it was 2 miles downhill!

    * I say that as a professional shuffler.

Hmm. According to the training app, I ran 30 mins and rested (walked) 6 mins. They have me at 8:39 pace.

It was a walk/run but I did stop at two stop lights. All rests were under 2 mins.

It is a huge jump. The one I did this morning was mostly flat. The 9:55 only has one hill. But I used to do one that is mostly hill and usually get 13 or 14 pace at my fastest (which is rare).

If it's real please tell me your secret.

    Non technical method.
Drive for, say, 3 miles and back. Run it with a stop watch.

@Unveiled Artist - do you do races? That's the main thing I've missed in lockdown. Can't wait till I can do another...looking like August unless I can find one sooner that I fancy.

It could be the non-strava one (the blue one) since 8:39 isn't that much of a huge jump from 9:55. I don't think.

I think so... since I did two miles and pace is measured by miles, 6:13 would ideally be one mile and add that two the second mile, the pace doubles (assuming I stayed the same speed the whole entire time.. I didnt)

Wait I have to add too? With what? When?
I subtracted the two numbers got 12:09 not sure if it's right?

Forget it. I want to keep trying so I could learn so I went back to it but I dont know what I am doing...probably will go back to it again tho cuz I hate myself and want to try.

Actually, no. Not yet. I did a virtual race but didn't finish since its not the same. I'm not really a competitor so I'd do it for the fun. I'm not sure how fast you need to run in a race to not be disqualified though.

I've noticed similar things. Times, distances, even paths traveled aren't necessarily accurate. Using those, I've found you pretty much have to average it and exclude outliers (you'll spot these when you see them as they produce data way off).

Unless you have visions of winning, fun is what we do it for :) (and possibly a charity)

Huh? In the UK there's no disqualifying for that. Worst case is in a longer race (half marathon or above) if it's a road race (as opposed to x-country) there comes a point when the police/marshalling ends and the roads are re-opened. Just means you stay on the sidewalk. The time period allowed for the race is generous.
