"Republican civil war"

A Republican civil war is raging, with righter-than-thou conservatives dominating more and more primaries in a fight for the party's soul.

Do you think this is an accurate description of the current state of the republican party? Why/how do you think this "war" started? Who do you think will "win the party's soul" and what do you think the result of that will be?

Edit: do you think this will really benefit the democratic party?

I fail to see any benefit to a GOP civil war when the democrats have so thoroughly alienated their base that most registered democrats have no intention of voting.

The more moderate and sane conservatives need to finally distance themselves from the religious fundamentalists among their ranks.

Not really. The Republican will fight like cats and dogs amongst themselves during the primaries, but when it comes to the general election they'll vote for the party nominee.

However, there aren't enough committed Republicans out there to win elections. The Democrats are hoping the Rethugs nominate enough bug-eyed lunatics to scare off the independents.

Edit: do you think this will really benefit the democratic party?
Maybe, because the likelihood of the Republicans nominating a significant number of bug-eyed lunatics is always fairly high.

It looks more like hurting the GOP than benefiting Democrats. Having good candidates with good ideas is the one valid way of helping any party, anyway.

Meh. It'll be a lot of backbiting and mudslinging, and when the elections come, the right-wing nutjobs, fundamentalist fanatics, and post-conservative fascists will just dupe, bully, and inveigle the Red-state sheeple to vote their civil-rights-hating, poor-people-stomping, nonwhite-people-trashing, environment-ruining, misogynistic, homophobic candidates into office, and they'll all nod like sun-dazzled ducks and do what they're told.

And the Democrats, as usual, will sit around with their thumbs up their a****, promising the vanishing middle class some "real change," and swearing to make the lot of the oppressed better, and they'll field a bunch of centrist, do-nothing, milquetoast gomers who'll either get their a**** handed to them or barely scrape into office, only to then plop down and do jack to the power of s*** to actually get anything done or change anything. And on the off chance they are actually given some real power and the opportunity to use it and make real change, they'll p*** it away trying to get in bed with the Republicans and their Big Business cronies, and trying to convince the American people that just because they're Democrats doesn't mean they're really (gasp) liberals, until they're powerless again, only this time with fatter campaign chests.

In other words, nothing will change.

I think I love you.
