Question about Japanese chefs knives.

Anyone who know if Japanese Santoku knives are good?
I ask because someone wish to gift me with a set of these kind of knives.

Even if they should be of lesser quality I do appreciate the gift :) My knowledge about knives are very very limited :)

No knowledge of them but my google search shows they are not cheap (in Australia at least), between $150 and $250 for a single knife.

I have a block of Japanese knives. They're great as general utility knives.

Worth noting, Santoku refers more to the style of knife than any particular brand, so you'll see them for vastly different prices and of different qualities.

They are generally shaped somewhat like this;

In terms of cost, they vary massively. I can get a single knife for $20, but a good one will be much more expensive, and paying $200 isn't crazy.

They are particularly good for thin slicing.

That was **** placement. Not design. You don't build a reactor in the coast of Japan. That's a recipe for disaster.
Location is part of design.
And design should consider location.
So....bad design.

I prefer...
Wrenches made in Ameristan & Germany.
Hand pruners made in Japan.
Limb loppers made in Switzerland.
Haggis made in Scotland.
Cartoons made in Ameristan.
Rugs made in Iran.

I would read up on the care of them. Any knife can be ruined by abuse and it would be a shame to see such tool get ruined. Do not use the cheap and simple draw through sharpeners on those knives. That will lower them almost instantly to the qualify of an average knife.
