punishment or purification

If in this life or the next what is most important to you, that evil is punished or evil doers purified?

Is justice so important that you would want it more than you would want the wrong doer to understand, ask for forgiveness and move away from wrong doing?

"Purified" isn't a word I would normally use, but I select that one.

Responding to suffering by deliberately causing more suffering just for the sake of causing it is malevolent and irrational. A more thoughtful and compassionate response is to focus on:
-Ensuring that no further damage can be done, and mitigating current damage.
-Rehabilitating the one that caused the damage.
-Putting forth a reasonable deterrent.

Of course not.

This is a really good question.

Can't it be a mix of both?

How about punishing the evil and then purifying it?
Seems the most fair to me.
